The worst predators are dogs, but you also have to be concerned with coyotes, bobcats, hawks, owls, raccoons and skunks. While there are exceptions, domesticated cats are generally only a problem with smaller birds. We have a lot of cats in the neighborhood that routinely venture into our yard, but I don't worry too much about them getting the chickens. DE won't do much for your black widows, it would be difficult to get it on them in their retreats. However, the chickens will handle them quite fine. We used to have a lot of black widows but the chickens decimated them.

Thanks Gallo. Good to know about the black widows. I'm right behind Jim Click Ford. I've only seen an occasional coyote in the area. I haven't seen bobcats, racoons, or skunks around this area. With my luck, my yard would become their regular hang-out lol. I'm planning on getting Silkies, so I should probably put some kind of cover over the Chicken Yard. The neighbor's cat loves to come in my yard just to torment my dogs. It would most likely think those Silkies would make a great lunch. My dogs are going to be gated in another area away from the chicken yard, so I won't have to worry about them. I hope.

Mikey you might want to take a cruise around your yard/coop/run area at night with a black light and look for 'em (they glow in black lights). I get so mad when I see 'em hanging out next to my sleeping ladies!

That sounds like a great idea for a teenage activity!

Of course Walt will probably save them up in a jar and milk the venom for poison tipped blow darts...

I saw a multi LED UV flashlight at Walgreens for around $16.

So Tammy & I go out to let out the cluckers and feed them some corn on the cob.

When sallying through the coop / run I noticed an egg on the shelf - a tad bit small and quite lighter colored then all the rest!

We think someone started laying.

Culprits could be

GSL (possibility because I found a feather of theirs in the nest box but they haven't reddened up fully yet)

Wellsomer (prolly not 'cause it was way too light but they have reddened up pretty fully now)

App Spitz (prolly not cause I don't think they are ready)

Silkie/cochin cross (prolly not cause she is way too small and the egg was too large for her)

No one is squatting yet so one of my older girls cold have just gotten lazy in the location and pigment department.

We'll have to see over the next couple of days...
