Arizona Chickens

Quote: Not all bumblefoot needs to be treated. Only if there is swelling, limping, fever, etc. should you treat it. If none of those are present, the infection is either minimal, and the body is handling it just fine, or the body has sealed it off; opening it when one of these is the case increased the likelihood that it will get worse rather than remaining a non-issue.

Sounds good. We just got our little precious chicks in today. I like the ice in a bucket of water..
We got red silkie, partridge silkie, gold sebright,Easter egged & Millie fleur..
Ace hardware has a sprinkler, possibly a sprinkler mister, I heard about that is above ground
3 1/2 feet or so.. I'm going to go and get one and try it out for next summer..

i just wanted to add to the what works in this weather discussion. i have a large dog kennel with a tarp roof, misters and box fan set up along the west side, and backed up to the block fence on the east. their roosts are on the north near the nest boxes. there is no "enclosed" coop, just tarp pulled down making the NE corner of the kennel closed off to the elements.
they get layer crumble and fresh water every morning and i feed them cold or frozen fruit and veggie scraps 2 or 3 times a day. there is one kitty litter size pan full of water that gets refilled every day for them to stand in and drink from. today is the first day i put some ice in it.
we have had no heat loss and very minimal panting. it works for them, so it works for me. i'll let everyone know if this tarp survives the monsoon

Best of luck girl on the tarp...sometimes I think the less we over-react the better. Last summer I did nothing but water 3 times a day and treats. This year I have the mister out there and they like it as sitting in the mud puddle right now! A month or so ago I lost my blue copper marans roo, then a couple weeks ago a copper marans hen...I read they don't do so well in the heat, as well as silkies, but they are fine so far... I put frozen water bottles in with chicks, quail and baby quail I can't keep in AC in the house for 2 more months so trying to acclimate them to outside rather than the AC at 80...I lost 3 of those a couple weeks ago putting them outside in the heat after 3+ weeks in the AC...dummy me...learning experience for sure.

hey there. sorry to hear about your losses this summer. i'm so excited that you got into quail, however i didnt get the rabbits i was waiting for. turns out my grandmas dog smashed the cages and they disappeared into the woods. ah well.
in the early part of the day the misters do great, but after 4 somehow the very little breeze we get seems to stop and the water just puddles in the pen. its funny to see the line of chickens just to the outside of the line of mud, they dont like to lay in it, but like to be near it.
btw, from the eggs i hatched from you i have two gorgeous EE/? roosters. and the hens are laying now - but i gave those all to my friend in payson since they werent EEs.
hope you all keep as cool as you can.

I've been giving grass clippings to my chickens for years.
I've never had an impacted crop.

Glad we got the clouds this afternoon, that really kept us from going all the way up to 114 as forecast.

My birds in the grow out coops looked much less stressed today.

The birds in the coop with AC looked very happy.

Incidentally, the adorable little guy in the foreground is going to need a home at some point. He is about 3 weeks old and is already practicing his squeak crows.....he is a Serama/banty mix. Anyone need a sweet little roo?

Wow that is one cute little guy. How can he have a comb so young? What banty is he mixed with? I really like him.

Thanks! He is a little cutie!

His daddy is a friendly & mellow Serama, and mom is either an EE that lays creamy blue eggs, or a duckwing OEGB that lays creamy white (both of which are friendly moms that are regular layers). I am pretty sure mom's the EE though. I should be able to remember 100%, but there you are...

I don't know why he developed his comb so early.....must be an overachiever! Well, pm me if you or anyone else is interested in hearing more about him. We're in N. Central Phoenix, not too far from Western Ranchman......

I have a white silkie roo that I will need to go at some point as only keeping 1, I have 1 hatched out in November and 1 from February from Bargain - Nancy Garry on BYC. The girls are just starting to lay so hopefully one of these roos are doing the job.
GrannysRoost your a little far for me but can you post a picture , There are a few more newbies asking about silkies also if hes really cute I might have to make a road trip lol
