Arizona Chickens

Quote: Molting birds do not lay, with the heat we have had, many birds are not laying. Their age is not likely the issue. You hear about that kind of age with commercial hens, but that is because if a battery hen does not lay every single day, she is not worth her feed (from a commercial standpoint).

These are silver duckwings, they are called Old English Game Bantams too. My avatar pic is our actual guy, El Gallo Guapo. I will be posting pics of the chicks when they arrive.
Silver duckwing is the variety, Old English Game Bantam (OEGB) is the breed. You have very handsome birds!

I just got caught up. WOW. So much going on! The BB gun incident is horrible! There's a lot of sick people out there...and they breed.

All the talk about rotten kids...I couldn't agree more. I'm one of those 'young' moms, I guess. I'm 35 and have 5 children and 1 on the way, oldest is 7. Now, DH and I are FREAKS according the the 'norm' today. Neither of us is divorced, we're still married...to each other. I stay at home. We have a large family, by today's standards, and...get ready...wait for it...I HOMESCHOOL! That's usually the kicker, when people look at me like I just stepped off a spaceship. Then I mention that I garden, have chickens in the city, and cloth diaper, and they just don't know what to think.

On to chicken matters...Pastrymama hatched out 5 chicks for me last Thursday. I've had 2 hens that have been broody since EASTER, so I tried to give them the chicks. Well they acted like I threw firecrackers at them, but it sure cured their broodieness! Maybe the freeloaders will start actually start laying eggs again. My goal is to get more than 2 eggs a day out of 7 laying hens.

I know this must have been asked a thousand times, but I have a broody hen that's been hanging out in the coop for about a month now. My wife is sick of being pecked from her when she retrieves the eggs and frankly, I'm sick of her loud, angry attitude as well. If this goes on much longer she's headed for the crock pot! I'd appreciate any suggestions to break her of this habit. Thanks!

Let her hatch some eggs...or try to give her chicks. People have tried having the broody sit on ice packs, wire floor cages and other things, but nothing will 'break' her like raising chicks. My broody started laying again when the chicks were a few weeks old. And it was really neat watching her with the chicks.

I just can't believe it was a natural predator. Why would they kill and not take them? Usual wild animals do not kill just to kill but kill to eat and kill and run like heck with their prey. Dogs love to kill for the sack of killing and probably was some pets that got loose. The Harris hawk will eat dead animals if they find it.
It is sad to us when predators get our pets but everyone remember that we have invaded their territory and the wild animals are just as precious to us and the world as our babies are to us.
