Arizona Chickens

hatch update!
its day 21 and we have:
6 fluffy EE x Barnevelder
3 alohas from the large eggs - - however, only 1 chick is large, the other 2 must have been swimming in all that egg space
9 random alohas, all except 2 are yellow. the other 2 have one brown stripe.

i will try to get pictures later, but i have a horrible camera.

@beehappy: how is the rest of your hatch turning out? what did you do with that little guy? i've saved ones with umbillical problems, they usually heal. but i have had to cull one that couldnt uncurl his legs. hoping the best for you and your chicks! :D

Ended up with 5; 2 wheaten marans, 1 barnevelder, 1 cuckoo maran, and the little black copper maran with deformed feet. He (don't know why but I feel like it is a boy) is up on his legs now and able to move around so am waiting to see, his umbilical cord healed up which is good, he is a lot smaller than the other chicks so is getting extra care. The Barnie is the only really healthy chick out of the hatch and will be ale to go in the brooder tomorrow with the other newly hatched chicks, the other 4 will stay in my cicu (chick intensive care unit) until they are doing better. I put the next batch in lockdown on Tuesday so hopefully even though it is a smaller batch since they are from my flock and I usually have 90%+ hatch rates it will produce some flock mates for them, it makes it easier to integrate with other birds when they already have a fair size "pack"! I still have 6 marans in the incubator that go into lockdown later this month so am still hopeful for some good marans. I wish I could find someone local with either blue marans or black copper marans the are not hatchery birds that sell hatching eggs. Shipping to Arizona is torture for hatching eggs. Because of different shipping dates I have literally been going through lockdown once a week since the beginning of September and have 4 brooder pens set up right now to accomidate the different ages, when it comes to chicks even 1 week is a huge difference in the size and temp they are kept at.

What is an Aloha? Not familiar with the breed.

What in the world was that????

We are out in Picture Rocks. Just had gone to transfer some chickens from a friends to my daughters. We pull up into her drive way and see an animal run out from her parking awning, run behind the shed and then poke it's head out and looks back at us.

It was long, sleek, dark fur and low to the ground. Pointed nose. It reminded me of weasels up north but we aren't even close to their habitat. It was too dark to be a native ferret. We are thinking maybe a pet ferret (European) that someone dumped??

It looked like it had a prickly pear fruit in it's mouth (kinda hard to tell)

Was it a coatimundi?

I think the above pic is of the South American species. Here is our native white-nosed coati:
