Arizona Chickens

I need to post pictures of the Olive Eggers that notinoz hatched for me. ALL FIVE of them are starting to get pink on their combs.

Sorry, I meant to say all 4. Of the Olive Eggers. The Aloha reject still looks like a girl, and is actually looking really pretty. Sort of a speckled partridge pattern.

I don't think that I can process birds that I've taken care of for so long, so hopefully notinoz has room in her freezer.

As anyone dealt with Ideal before?

I got an e-mail they sent at 5PM yesterday, telling me my order had shipped.

I'm guessing it's just an automated thing that someone sends out at the end of their shift?

It's going to get into the 40's and if the chicks arrive at the PO tonight, it could be TOO cold for them...

Of course, I'm a worry wart!

Oh no! That would make me worry too. I hope they're O.K.

> since I am still out in the Death Valley area at 23k feet elevation, it seems that I need to infuse my garden with a new crop of worms each season. With constant summer temperaturs of triple digits they dig in so deep that I can not longer find them. (I bet they cooked) I did start growing them but it was for use in the garden. Someday I'll be back in N Az at 5k feet elevation and the winters are cold enough to freeze the water in the chicken yard but the sun is hot enough during the summer to fry all life. So it is not just temperature that one must consider but closness to the sun .

you just need more organic matter to hold the moisture and thick mulches. It is amazing how much OM gets burned up here in the summer. Many garden books suggest just an inch of compost or manure. I put on 6 INCHES of rotted horse manure, coffee grounds, leaves, ect and that seems barely enough. If I don't have leaves I top it with several inches of straw or fresh small wood chips. Keeps the ground much cooler and the worms a lot happier! I grew some squash in 12 inches of manure.... got over 100 pounds from TWO plants http://edible-garden.blogspot.com/

OK that's weird. I know I posted yesterday about hatching eggs but the post does not seem to be showing up for some reason. So will try again. I want to do the NYD hatchalong but really don't want shipped eggs in Dec.

I'm looking for hatching eggs of the following, reasonable good SOP stock.
Black Copper Marans
Ameraucana (real ones that lay blue eggs, not EEs)
Buff Orpingtons

To be picked up Dec 9 to be set Dec 11 If you might have some please PM me with photos of your breeders. Thanks!

I wouldn't worry too much. I have had ducks, geese and chickens, chickens coming from Ideal, delivered in April here (Pinetop) and have never had a problem. We still have snow on the ground at that time, brrrr! It takes about six hours in the back of a un-heated mail truck to get here because of stops the delivery truck as to make. Your chicks will be fine :) I would have their food, water, and brooder completely set up for them before they arive. That way their food and water will be warm, and they will adjust faster. Make since?

Good luck

Hi all, I need to cull 11 roosters, and I know that I could do it the old fashion way, but I prefer something fast and easy. I am wondering if anyone has a barrel type feather plucker that I could borrow, rent, or buy.

Thanks
