Arizona Chickens

Been so busy lately that I haven't checked the thread and finally got caught up with all the posts. Seems like Coyotes have been an issue lately and I am sorry to all those that have lost birds. I went through that so many times which prompted me to build the fort knox chicken run which at the time of building it I thought I will never fill this puppy up and now I am trying to figure out how to break it to my DH that I need another one built. It is such a relief that when the coyotes start going crazy like they do every night that I don't have to run out with my flashlight hoping they hadn't broken into my makeshift coop or run. This might be an old wives tale but they say if you pee around a perimeter that it deters coyotes as they don't like the smell. My sister did that in Colorado and they never lost a single bird to a coyote, of course she had 2 boys more than happy to do the deed and lived on land with no neighbors close by which makes it easier. I find it was hard to break my son of peeing outside that if I allowed him now all my hard work would be for moot.

My hatch did not go as well as fuzzybird...I ended up with 1 little chick that is suppose to be a lemon orpington but I don't think it is. Either way that lonely little chick is with the 1 Icelandic chick I hatched from Mahorni. I am hopeful my luck has changed though because I candled tonight and i have 3 Sex Link Marans, 11 BBS Orpingtons, 3 White Leghorns, 2 Lakenvelders, 2 Icelandic, 4 Golden Campines, 22 Blue Marans, and 4 Barred rock eggs growing that go into the hatcher on Saturday just in time for me to set eggs for the NYD hatch along. Plus I am going to brood some chicks for Pastrymama that are due to hatch Saturday so I will have little fuzzy's coming out of my ears! If anyone is interested in dayold chicks PM me as I was not expecting that many eggs or breeds...Oh and I had a hen go broody that should also be hatching on Tuesday and she is on 14 eggs (I wonder if she would notice if I put 50 day old chicks with her to brood

I got 3 Black Copper Marans hens from desertmarcy and they got to go with the big girls and out of quarantine. They are the sweetest birds and had been in a pen with 2 month olds. So today I come out and my broody hen is making her business in the run but I don't see the BCM's so I look in the coop and 1 is in the special nesting box on the ground (apparently the 4 raised nesting boxes where to much work to get to) so mamabroody comes into the coop and sees her in HER box and goes crazy clucking at her and chases her out of the box and climbs back in complaining the whole time that not only did I bring in new girls but the new girls had the audacity to sit in HER box while looking at me with I WANT TO KILL YOU FACE (which I totally understand as I am PMSing and just ask my husband I have had that face all week). So I give her space and go back out later to check on her and sitting on the ground next to the box are all three BCM's just sitting there on active guard, as soon as me or any other bird comes in that coop they start giving the warning clucks. They are officially mamabroody's watch hens.

beehappy... who did you get your blue marans and Icelandics from?

I wouldn't mind buying a couple blue marans or blue orps....

I traveled to Gilbert to the wonderful home of Nurseshelly... 55 minutes there in rush hour 45 minutes back... 52 mile round trip, picked up the five little Icelandic chicks...2 white, 2 brown and one little light brown chipmunk-Drekki Jr. look alike (THANK YOU NURSESHELLY FOR INCUBATING THEM FOR ME!)... got home after dark. Before turning the light off in the coop, I noticed that Blucey was sitting in a nest box... so I may have another broody Icelandic.

I carefully put all five chicks underneath Ida and she seemed to immediately accept them and clucked to them and seemed to make room underneath her for them.

I'll be worried sick all night. I thought more than once about just putting them in the Laree brooder and keeping them alive, but I decided that Ida needs to become my Lukka if at all possible and I need to have faith.

So pray along with me and stay tuned.

PS... LOVED the little Seramas at Nurseshelly's home!! WOW! SO TINY AND CUTE!!!
Did you see the pictures of my little Seramas I hatched? Nurseshelly had some to?

DMRippy for the marans and Debs_flock for the icelandics, I will let you know how the hatch goes, I already owe you a couple chicks so its great if you want one of the other breeds.

Hey there! I haven't checked back to this thread in a while, thought I would pop in, check it out, and ask a few questions while I'm at it!

I'm in Tucson, I have been looking around for info on what is needed for my chickens in the winter, and everything winter-y is really aimed at the snowy northern cold. I was wondering how protected from the cold our desert birds need to be? Right now I have them in a pretty open run/coop. I'm not sure what I need to do to make sure they are all safe when the frosts start to hit.

Keep them dry. Another tarp (or clear vinyl like a shower curtain liner) would be helpful.

Well all the chicks are alive and well and she is mothering them wonderfully.

I put them in the pet carrier and moved them to the west grow out pen in the DARK this morning.

Then after I'd put a waterer at the front with some chick mash, I shined the light in and she had scooted all of the chicks under her and then because she could see, she saw one of her stray golf balls and tenderly tucked it under too!

IT WORKED!!! Ida's a mommy!!!

Unfortunately, I cannot take any chicks until after Christmas, as we are traveling to Santa Barbara, CA for the entire month. You all know I don't have chickens yet. I can't wait for some fluffy-butts! Anywho, this would be the perfect oppertunety to start my flock, so if anyone could do me a biiiiig favor, and, you know, keep some chicks for me until after Christmas break?... That'd be great if anyone could... I do need to get some chicks, and I need to finish the coop! (We're soooo close to being done, and, and... We keep putting it off!)
Thanks,
Rezia
