Arizona Chickens

Oh geeze, glad I didn't look out the window. Seriously, we have at least 3 breeds of owls big enough to be what you describe here along the Pantano. The guineas help, but we ended up putting a roof over the coop and the enclosed chicken play yard.

Shoot that is scary. I'm definitely going tomorrow to get that vine/ cloth. I'm going to have to put it up somehow so that they don't think they can fly into my open area.
As my girlfriend and I were walking this afternoon. Saw a hawk circling a house close to hers! She has a flock of chickens as well.

Any chance you can get any recipes from family members? Of any sorts?

Jenny, Our golden sex-link. Is younger then our other girls & started laying 1ST. I'm hoping they do ok in the summer? Sorry for your loss :(

Question, our roo is six months old. How much longer will his funky hackle keep growing?
Also, They found the cat food. How much is too much?
Where is the notification to tell when everyone is online?

Noodles - I'm so sorry for your loss.We started with a pair of red sex-links hens and when one died her "Sissy" screamed and screamed when I took the body out. Never will forget that... She kept peeking into the hen house, perhaps confused by the weird nap her friend was taking. I shoulda known better although it appeared to be a quick demise. This bird knew something was terribly wrong. They're not as dumb as most folks think. (8 days of around 110F heat and they still layed everyday - even with misters and ice jugs it was just too much).I doubt I'll do sex-links again, suspect they just lay themselves to death.

I know its probably too late, but some folks do cremate pet chickens. If she's a close pet, I don't think its silly. A pet's a pet.

I do not think anyone is silly, my Chickens are pets. I am hopping to be able to move some day to where I can have 30 or 40 chickens with a couple of roosters. My Grils will still be my pets, never retired to a stock pot. Right now I am looking for one more, a Wyandotte, making 7 pet chickens, if anyone has a 2 month old +/- Silver Lace, Golden, or any other variety for sell in the Phoenix area, please let me know.

CITY FARM: I have my Grandmothers B. recipe book on my mom's side. She was a baker. Haven't seen it for years, I hope I have it in storage. Grandmother S. didn't have one that I know of. The root beer is one that I wish I had, you probably had to press the root to get the juice, I do not know. I kind of remember her boiling something that smiled like root beer. But this memory is very vague, and not reliable.

maryhysong I'm on a really tight budget right now. I really wish I could. I have a lot of irons in the fire.

My sister came over to see my garden and the girls. She dose not think I should let them free range in my yard, their poop would dirty my yard. There was a poop on my patio I missed, that upset her. Tonight she told me I really have to clean it up, "it is unsightly". True, and I did earlier, but...... Dirty my yard?

our society has become waaaaay too germaphobic. Makes me crazy. My kids played in the rabbit barn, ate worms, rolled in grass where chickens ran, squished poo between their toes..... none were ever very ill all the time they were growing up. No ear infections, no pneumonia, ect. The only time they went to the ER was if they got a cut too big for a butterfly bandaid that would really need stitches and the time my daughter was bit by a dog. They were happy, healthy kids that got dirty every day, took a bath at night and did it again the next day. One of their cousins, raised in an apartment by an OCD mother who never allowed any dirt anywhere, let alone on her kid was in the hospital almost every winter with some kind of respiratory infection. I think because they were never exposed to anything so they could never develop immunity.

I do the same with my chickens. Chicks in the brooder get earth worms with the compost, fresh greens and weeds, with the dirt, all to help build up their immunity to stuff. Had a couple three or four months old and a couple two weeks old get a bit of a runny nose a couple weeks ago. I did nothing at all, just continued to feed fermented chick grower, worms, greens, they are just fine and not snotty at all now.

Anyone else going to the poultry show on Jan 5 in Safford?
I will be going. My daughter is entering our Serama cockerel. It's her/our first entry into a show. Figured it might be fun/interesting to try out. Although since we are new, we weren't sure what color he was when asked. I looked at the SOP but didn't get very far (they really could use some nice pictures of representative coloring). Anyone on here have an idea what color he is? I tried in the Serama forum, but haven't had any luck yet.

Thanks,
Nathan
