Arizona Chickens

2 pics to show ya:

The first one shows the first egg from what I'm guessing was my CM. The middle is a Leghorn from a friend and the right one is from the RIW that I got yesterday. Funny thing about the RIW was that her egg was in the hanging 5 gallon feed bucket when I got home.

Well, I snuck in to check on them tonight to make sure they were all tucked in ok... The second pic answers my questions about why the egg was in the feed bucket. (Don't mind the DE splatters... I could not find my duster to even it all out after I flicked it around)

I was actually going to mention you might need a lid for the feed in the last post of your coop but dropped it! Haha!
How cute, I bet it's nice and soft too. She wants only the best.

If she doesn't you can always cut out a cardboard circle or the like.

Or just put her on the roost... she stayed on the roost right where I put her tonight. I'm all about re-training animals... for SURE I'm smarter than a chicken's will - I hope... Laree - keep your comments at bay, please

Laree - Hurray for live chicks! I missed something on the countertops.

Cluckin - congrats on the eggs! Love the pic of them. Good luck with re-training.

On the unexpected gift of my new Golden Feather status, now that I have recovered from the surprise, I am excited to try it out!

Duck eggs could be very interesting for the school. I hope it works out.

Have a happy Sat all!

After coops are cleaned and I get my "sermon" for Church printed out (can't get my wireless printer to work gotta run to the office)... Yeah, I'm giving the Palm Sunday talk, ( Sunday morning, 9AM, 2222 N. 40th St.

)...

I'm doing a feed store run, Stock Shop, Feed Barn and probably Western Ranchman for some Grower., then to radio shack for another hygrometer/thermometer. I've also got to do a weeding of the garden and harvesting of some broccoli and cauliflower, romain lettuce and probably some fresh peas for Sunday dinner.

Son #3 is involved in shooting a commercial for a bond override for the PV school district. Son #5 is going to some grocery store to sell Scout-O-Rama tickets. Son #4 has committed to get the lawn mowed both here and down at the office.

Then I've got to do an inventory of what I've got for Sunday dinner... (roast, potatoes, rolls, carrots etc..) I always get it ready and in the pot on Saturday evening ready to turn on Sunday morning.

DW has a meeting tonight from 6 to 8 so I'll be rounding up all the kids if they've run off to neighbors.

Isn't it great to be busy?????

NOT!

... beats the alternative of a takin' a dirt nap...

Busy, busy!

I have swim lessons, Western Ranchman, minor coop maitenance, grocery shopping, cleaning out the old fridge & putting the food into the new fridge, drywall, and paint.

Cheerful- You didn't miss anything with the countertops. My house has been in continual chaos since we bought the dump. The construction is on the homestrech, and a few AZ BYC-ers have been over...but no has seen the kitchen since we "finished" the counter tops. Maybe Tofu, but I seem to remeber the house being supremely dirty. Anywho, Cluckin had asked for pics at one point and the DH took a bunch of pictures Thursday.

In short: My kitchen went from this:

ETA: the old house ended at the beam. The original kitchen is underneath that beam. 3 tiles wide, 10 tiles long.

Midnight lets me pick up her babies and pet her, but you should see this angry mama when Foxy, our miniature dauchsund, is around. This morning, I was crouched down in front of Midnight's box picking up her babies when she came out all huffed up - she ran between my legs (remember- I'm crouched down) and attacked the dog behind me. She did this 3 different times in about 5 minutes - I'm now trying to remember to shut the garden gate before going in to check on my broodys.

I think a huge part of the success is putting them under her at night - they have all night long to bond. I removed her eggs and placed 6 chicks under her at aroun 8 p.m. - checked in on them 3 more times before going to bed and then got up bright and early to make sure that she hadn't kicked them out.

Last year, one of my broody barnevelders hatched some australorps & 1 light brahma (yellow chick with feathered legs). A couple days later (during the daytime), I was successful in giving her a 4-5 day old barred rock chick to raise (black like the australorps), but she would not take in the EEs of the same age - she could tell they were not her chicks and wouldn't let them near. Penny didn't care that the yellow brahma was the only chick that was not black because she recognized it as hers - funny she let in the barred rock.
