Oh wow, that was SOOO Rocket! He also jumped up onto the computer desk and watched with me. Simon's meowing got his attention.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts! We still can't believe it's true and it seems so surreal. Even more weird, we found his ID tag laying in the chair where he sleeps yesterday, separated from his collar.

The whole event seems so miraculous.

Oh, I wanted to tell everyone about the most incredible thing that happened last night. Right before midnight we got a telephone call that woke us from a sound sleep. It was someone calling to tell us that they found Rocket! They had just seen him crossing Speedway Blvd, saw his reflective collar and knew that he was out of place and needed help. They stopped and called to him and being the awesome cat he is, he went right up to them. They found our contact information on his tag. We can't believe he survived those six days of wandering. Where he was found he would have had to have crossed six lanes of Broadway, four lanes of Alvernon, six lanes of Speedway and all of the smaller roads in the two miles that he had travelled. We suspect he was chased far by the coyote and got lost. We've all been so terribly sad since he went missing and then lost the chickens; we were so overjoyed at his return that we couldn't hardly sleep. I also keep thinking about that kind young couple that went out of their way to help and refused anything in return. Such good and decent people.

It got down to 16 degrees here last night. Looks like I'll have lots of dead branches from my Australian acacia tree to use as perches in the coop that's in the planning stages. And lots of leaves for the chickens to scratch in. That tree froze back to 3' high two years ago and is now 10-15' high. In the freeze of 2007 it did the same thing. Good thing it grows fast

In my back yard it hit 23.7 degrees. Pretty dang cold for east central Phoenix.

I imagine all of my hard work has been for naught. Makes me sad.

Hello Everyone!
My coop's base is finished! It is a 10 x 6 foot rectangle made of treated redwood. We ran hardware cloth under the whole thing. This weekend, we are going to Home Depot or Lowes and getting lumber! We need a design for nestboxes, though. Does anyone have any ideas? It is a small coop. (3' tall x 6' wide x 4' long) The pen is 10' x 6'. The actual coop is raised 3 feet in the air. The floor will be made of chicken wire. So the poop falls through. We'll keep rugs on it in the winter; better insulation. At the rate we're going, we should have it entirely done by next month. Shoot.

What a great story and what a smart (or lucky) kitty to avoid being hit by traffic. I'm glad you got him back. Did he look skinny?

Finally had activity with my fermented feed. My house is a little cool for formentation. They gathered around the bowl, eying it suspiciously, Lucy (RIR) dived in. They like it. Now I only hope it was properly fermented.

Talk about luck with that tag not coming off sooner
