Arizona Chickens

And Miley is great. Tolerant to a point then just gets up ENOUGH YOU CRAZY CHICKEN ! Very quietly. Bonnie's Shiatsu doesn't bark either. Nice to see such an even temperament in little dogs.

I'm freaking out! I get to pick my chicks up on Tuesday!

I set up an extra-large My First Pet wire rabbit cage (with the giant plastic base), bought a 100 watt Zoo Med reptile heat bulb and got it adjusted to where it is keeping things around 95, got unmedicated chick starter/grower (going to keep things squeaky clean), got the red-plastic-watering base and mason jar... and thanks to the substrate-alternatives thread I got pine-pellets (and transfigured them into sawdust) instead of shavings.

I'm not going to murder 7 chicks, am I?

The last time I had chickens I started out with 2 used silkies and let them hatch out eggs for me. It was much easier than this!

Rufus,

I've noted an "uptick" in the number of what I assume to be illegal aliens in my neck of the woods since last week.

I imagine most just want to work hard, but unfortunately, I believe many of them to be food stamp/ entitlement free loaders. I can imagine an uptick in robbery and break-ins soon.

My two children are seriously the ONLY kids in the entire school across the street that pay full price for breakfast and lunch. (The head lunch lady informed my wife of this fact not long ago)

Makes me sad for my state and my country.

This entire financial fiasco we find ourselves in now, was engineered by the White House. (I also blame complicit Republicans who are in the tank with them) They've admitted as much... problem is, most of the American people are being misled by them and the state run media. The sequester didn't cut spending at all, all it did was slow down the INCREASE in spending... and very little at that. Spending $$$ we don't have and have to pay interest on! Simple facts.

Everyone who is getting jobs cut and furloughed by the government, were handpicked by the POTUS to make it appear that we are suffering and of course to blame it on the other party... It's all they've done for 6 years. The only true suffering, is that caused by freeloaders and the fact that EVERYONE'S taxes have gone up since Jan. 1st and more especially all those who try to work a little harder.

Since gas prices went above $3.60 a gallon, I've had my schedule go to pieces. I'm back at 2010 levels again. Folks have decided that they can't afford to spend money on themselves when they need the $$$ to get to work. We will see massive layoffs start in the private sector again before the end of the year. Small business employers will stop offering healthcare and dental plans; Real estate may stay at current levels or rise slightly, simply because it's the only safe bet for savings at this juncture.

As soon as a barrel of oil is priced with the Yuan rather than the Dollar, we will see the price of gasoline skyrocket to over $12 a gallon with RUN A WAY inflation. We'll need weeds to pick to feed the chickens, feed will be much too expensive.

This new full fledged depression is going to make the last "recession" look like NOTHING. Anyone who actually believes there has been a 'recovery' need to pull the sunglasses off and walk out into the daylight. The only exceptions are the Dakotas, Wyoming, Montana and parts of Texas... due to the oil and natural gas boom there. A good investment at this point could be in pipelines or in ways to store or transport natural gas.

In reality, the only smart/safe thing for folks to do who have ANY extra cash at this juncture is to buy Gold, Silver and more importantly, real estate that can produce income.... I would also add if you've got the storage space; store COMMODITIES! TP, ammo, Food, water and FUEL!... and if you have any debt, pay it off as QUICKLY as possible. Barter may soon be the name of the game.

And the stock market? Get out or get ready for a HUGE tumble...

OK... getting down off of my soap box now.

Carry on.

they do have groups that will come in and help with neighborhoods.. Also some church organization have youth

that need to do their volunteer. Call your local police precinct

The city and the churches are the cause of the problem.  The city established a homeless shelter somewhere in the neighborhood.  That attracts that type of people to our area.  Then they throw them out when they catch them doing drugs, alcohol or having sex.  So then they end up doing that stuff in my alley.  The churches are feeding these characters and giving them used clothing.

These are not hard working people; they are bums.  People in the neighborhood say "somebody ought to call the cops."  What they really mean is that someone with papers ought to call the cops.  Since so few people are willing to contact the police, most crimes go unreported.

I've been there, and sadly you are right for the most part. We, my husband and I, worked hard to stay away from places like that. We found a few, like us, working to get back on our feet. Churches have a hard time knowing who is a bum, and who is a worker down on their luck. (Hobo). Bums want handouts...and quite frankly many are dangerous. One of the reasons we stayed away from homeless centers.

Mhonri you are speaking for me, you said it well.
I'm back to 1988 income. At lest we have chickens and many of us have gardens, fruit trees and even bees. I count my blessings. Grateful for the hard times of my past, I know I will survive.

Mahonri is correct. It is only the fact that oil and natural gas are priced in dollars that supports the value of the buck. In 1966 the silver backing was removed from the US dollar. The US government convinced the Arabs to price oil and gas in dollars. That gave value to the dollar; everybody needed dollars to buy oil. Now that monopoly is breaking up. Iran is selling oil for gold, and India and Turkey are buying it.

Soon the reserve currency will be the Yuan. It looks like the dollar is done for.

Who do you suppose is buying all of the gold and silver plus scrap copper and scrap iron? I suspect it is the Chinese gradually dumping dollars for hard assets. They are trying to get their hands out of the trap before it springs. When all of that currency that the government had printed up is turned loose, all you know what will break out. Those holding dollars abroad will dump them before they lose all of their value.

Remember what happened in Germany in 1923. The value of everyone's savings was reduced to zero. The same happened in Zimbabwe.

Plan your life accordingly.

The garden is coming along well. In fact, we'll have some stuff planted by the time the party comes along next weekend. My wife and I picked up four veggies from Lowe's last night and I have $43 worth of seeds coming in from Native Seeds. Below are photos of the first tier of the raised bed that I built last night. This section will be sunk about 4 inches below ground and two inches above ground. There will be another level of wood above it, but this gets the foundation going. The full footprint is an 8' square, with each section of the bed being about 3 1/2' wide. We're picking up a bunch of compost from Roxanne in Cave Creek tomorrow to fill the bed with. After watering every few days for the last few weeks, the dirt was nowhere near as difficult to dig as I thought, although I do have quite a few rocks larger than my fist. Oh, and the top horizontal section has a matching section on the lower end. I just didn't get the last photo taken. You all get the idea, though. It's all cleaned up a little bit more. Still more work to go, though.
Lost of work.. But what a good time... Enjoy.. We can't wait till your party... Gona be a blast.. This is the time of year to have them...once summer is here no more gatherings till winter...
