Arizona Chickens

Yes I am but have not decided quite when...soon though. The hatchery called me today and pushed my ameraucana order up so I am really excited I am going to have them this Friday instead of May 13th.
Cinnamon Queens and Buff Orpingtons are my next order.

I am new to this wonderful forum. I have read many of your entries in an effort to learn how to keep chickens in my back yard. Looked up the rules for Peoria, AZ (since my responsible children now in their 40's insisted I do )and will buy 2 pullets soon. I am currently preparing a place for them and have a question. Cats? Two troll my fence daily. How do I protect them from cats as I want them to roam the yard.

I don't really have any advice for you where cats are concerned. Cats don't survive long out where we live, so we don't have any neighborhood cats. But I am interested to hear what others say about this.
I wonder if they will be fine once they are full grown.

As for the cats, we have tons of stray cats in our area. They don't seem to bother with the chickens but they sure do give the doves a run for their money in the mornings. I would bet though if they could actually get inside with the juviniles it might not be so pretty. It's okay though I am pretty good with a sling shot!
I do have a great big fat lazy cat that I own and he lays on top of the brooder boxes and won't let the other cats anywhere near the babies. Its a long story but I broke him of playing with the chickens when he was about a year old. He would stick his paws in to tease them so one day I picked him up and put him in the big laying pen with about 30 hens. Shut the door and 30 minutes later he was hanging on the door meowing to be set free.

He just gaurds the brooders now not bothering a thing!

There was one last weekend.

There is one this weekend, I think it is at Cabelas? We will be out of town, so I didn't get all the details, but my friend that is going says they will have tons of ammo. They are also buying unwanted guns and giving credit toward new. I am sad to miss that as I need to sell one and get a different one. http://www.cabelas.com/retail-2/--cabelas--en--content--community--aboutus--retail--retail_stores--glendale--glendale.html.shtml

Then
, next weekend is the NRA show at the civic plaza - my friend tells me. She is checking into the details and we are going on Friday.
Looks like it is actually in 2 weeks per this site http://www.veriforcetactical.com/gunshows.php

As
someone said, there will be ammo. My DH said that Sportsmans just got a bunch of guns and ammo in.

Well the good news is that the gun show is in 2 weeks! So, one could go to the chicken show and then also the gun show!!

I can't wait to have a chicken we can show. Maybe my Ameraucana rooster will be a shower. One can hope.

Off to Cub Scout family camp. It is going to rain on us. Oh well. A bad day in the woods is better than a good day anywhere else. Right?

Have a great weekend, all.
