Arizona Chickens

If anyone has a set of extra or free to good homes chicks or hens.. A friend has a ministry that takes food, clothing, gardening supplies
& now chickens !!! To Mexico.. They pick a few neighbors in a neighhood & help them get established.. They only have two coops built
for them.. their next trip is may 30TH..
My incubator is full just to test my incubating skills. If I have a good hatch I could contribute.

Plus I just palced an order with Gabbards since I want SILVER SPANGLED HAMBURGS in my flock and have had a problem finding some in a timely manner.

The walmart in Winslow has White Mulberry trees for sale FYI. Toward the end of the month I will be visiting LKD in NW Phoenix. LKD and I are splitting the chick order from Gabbards. And thanks for the post about the reviews. Reviews are helpful and I do read them but it seems that the bad experiences are outnumbered byt the good reviews. Take Ideal, many people inculding myself have had satisfactory shippments and them many others have posted complaints. Just like every other aspect in life YIN & YANG, COLD AND HOT NIGHT AND DAY

I will be sure to bing a camera with me when I go to the post offfice to pick up my shipment. And I will open the box up to see what I have been shipped before I leave the post office and then I can report with evidence just in case there is a problem.

Where is Sommer when I need hatching eggs???? Guess I could call Laree...

Anyone in Phoenix, Mesa Tolleson with Fertile hatching eggs?

CALL ME!! I'll come pick them up.

602 Three 2 Six- Four 6 Five 9

Sommer just had a huge hatching. She's out in Mesa today and then she'll be out there again, so it would be a great time to get ahold of her, since she'll be out your way. I'm just not sure if she'll check the Forum tonight. I'll post a note on her door when I drive by later, though, for you.

Excellent idea, because Aloha lost a good chunk out of her recent order from Ideal and then half of the order they accidentally sent her instead. I've heard quite a few bad things about numerous hatcheries lately. Maybe the time of year, too much inbreeding, or just poor quality standards?

I have lost 25% of store bought privett birds this year. About 8 of 30. I'm very disappointed. I've hatchhed over 100 of my own this year, housed them separate from hatchery birds, and I've lost 2. That should say something about privett and hatcheries.

Well, I'm due with my 28 eggs on May 18th.

12 Aloha and then Tab will have to tell me again where the 16 from California came from. Looks like Welsummer, Olive eggers, some Ameraucanas etc....
...
If her broody doesn't do a good job hatching I'm certain she'll be happy to get some that I hatch.... if I hatch them!

Once again, I'll be a nervous wreck for three weeks. I've got to find my Spot check to make certain that my incubator is at the right temp.

DW asked what I was going to do with 28 more chicks. I told her, well, only half will hatch and only half of those will be girls so that's only 7, if I'm lucky and I may need to give some of those to Tab....

And the tragedy continues. Two more were dead when we got home this afternoon. The heat lamp burned out, but the air conditioner was off, so it was a comfortable 85* inside today and none of the others are huddling like they're cold. Losing two yesterday and two so far today, I just switched over to Tylan instead of the Duramycin-10. And once again, it's not either of our two initial problem children: Twitchy or Gasper. They are still alive and well for the time being. I'm going to go ahead and leave the heat lamp off to see how they respond when it gets cooler tonight. It's time for them to go to the coop outside by the end of the weekend (Tuesday for me), assuming we stop losing them for no good reason.

On an interesting note, I left fermented feed and dry crumbles both in the brooder today and they very clearly chose the dry crumbles. We had switched back to dry a few days ago wondering if it was an allergic reaction to the fermentation that was causing some of the problems. Things continued to get worse, so I don't see that as a possibility for our situation. It's ironic, because my older girls go after the fermented like maggots on a gut wagon. Like alcoholics at a beer festival. Or like, well, chickens on scratch!

Good thinking! If you do end up with an extra Olive Egger and an Ameraucana that nobody wants, let me know. I'm still interested in one of each breeds to add color to my basket. As it stands, I only have light brown from my Barred Rocks, and speckled medium brown from the Birchen Marans, and later the light brown and dark brown from the New Hampshires and Black Copper Marans respectively. We've collected a full four-dozen eggs sitting in the refrigerator for us, so with just three layers, we're already getting more eggs than we utilize. That will change this summer when my little sister is watching my three girls during the week, but at nearly two-dozen a week, I can get a bit more of a collection by then. It's amazing, such a small flock can fully provide a family of four's egg demands. I never would have thought... These three girls have been very reliable since they started laying. We might miss two or three the entire week.

Could you imagine how great it would be if every person in America were just allowed to keep a couple chickens?

I make it a habit to think positive, but be prepared. The people I got my last Great Dane from did just that. 3 bitches gave birth in 2 days, each usually has 3 to 4 pups, and never have they bread all 3 at the same time. They had 8, 9, and 9 healthy pups that is 26 Great Danes were they expected 9 to 12 pups. 9 were pre sold, they didn't expect more. What is all 28 hatch? :jumpy what happens when your positive thinking of 7 pullets, turns into 14 or more?
"Don't count your chickens before the hatch" goes both ways.

I did the same thing when ordering. Figuring a loss of chicks, mostly do to shipping stress. The last thought was, what if all service.

.............................
I have 2 laying a 3 rd started today. I use about 12 to 14 eggs a week when I was buying them. My egg needs are covered. I have 2 more house holds. My sisters family would like only 3 dozen eggs to take home every month. my mother and nephew do not eat eggs every day. I want to give eggs to 3 of my neighbors. I want them to love having chickens next door. Just to think all the people that will be benefiting from a small flock of 8 girls.
My newest layer, Voney, her egg did not have a full egg shell. As soon as she left the nest Lucy went in. It was only her first. 5 of my girls are doing egg song to day.
