Arizona Chickens

Just got through candling the six eggs under the broody. Looks like perhaps two have a chance of hatching. I left the others... just in case....
Never can tell....
Where's some chick pics of the 49 already hatched???

hey, im down in the Peck Cyn. area here in Rio Rico. I am also new to this forum and everyone is just swell. Welcome and feel free to hit me up sometime. Always fun to meet people local down here.

I have to re-home at least 2 of my roosters as is appears I am soon to have 4, which I think is going to be too many. No, I can't cull any of them myself because I'm too attached now (and so is my husband), which is making it very difficult to decide who to keep. I would like to know they're going to a good home but at the same time, I understand if in the future, you would need to "re-home" to chicken heaven. It's hard for us to part with any of them but we need to get rid of 2 of these 3.

Stories:

Roo 1 - "Chubby Cheeks" (28 week old EE)
Description: Has tried to do some "little" attacks, nothing major - no flying up, just little pecking attacks at our feet and extremely rare - usually only if I change shoes. We have pulled his feathers and hasn't really done it again. I can walk into the yard with no problems. He's a wonderful protector and lets the hens eat right from his beak when he finds something. He's beautiful! He has some sharp claws that did rip open one of my BR girls sides but now that they have saddles, I haven't had it happen again and to be honest, I'm not entirely sure it was him, but just assume because the other two roos are silkies. He crows a lot, but not sure if he would continue to do so if he didn't have the other two going back and forth with him. All in all, I think he is a very good rooster, so far...

Roo 2 - "Snuffleupagus" or "Snuffy" (28 week old red silkie)
Description: Definitely the most ornery! If my daughter is squatting down, he likes to fly up and attack her backside. He doesn't mess with me at all anymore as I started tugging his back feathers weeks ago when he started being a little biter - he would not just peck, he would grab on and not let go! He doesn't do this anymore. He does not chase or run after people. He cracks me up with his scruffy cuteness - he has become one of my husband's favorites because he is a little scrapper and never gives up. He doesn't really get any of the girls but he sure does keep trying. He occasionally scuffles with the blue silkie roo but our EE always steps in and breaks it up. I think we love him because he's the underdog, so if you like that scrawny little underdog type of pet, this one's for you. Also crows a lot.

Roo 3 - "Disco" (28 week old blue silkie)
Description: He reminds me of a proud little king. He has never flown up or attacked. He just dances all the time. We try to tug his feathers when he dances but boy does he got some moves and can dodge your hand too fast to get to him. I am beginning to think that he finds himself pretty funny that he can get away. He is pretty good all around. Doesn't seem to be too hard on the girls; he only seems to scuffle because Snuffy starts it. I think he crows the least but still gets going back and forth with the other two.

Shade, plenty of water, shade, misting system, shade, pan of water for them to stand in, shade. And its a good idea to make sure they have plenty of shade. :D

any tips on how to help your chickens survive the Arizona summer weather?
Lots of shade. Lots of water. Lots of air flow but keep them out of direct wind. (115 degree wind is not cooling.) On super hot days you can spray down the dirt in the run.

AC and evap cooling and misters are not advised if your chickens are going to be outside - it doesn't let them acclimate to the heat. Think how hot it feels outside when go out after having been in the AC all day, but if you are outside for a long time you get used to it and it doesn't seem so hot after a while. The stress of going back and forth from AC to heat and back is more of a problem than the actual temperature. This no AC/no evap/no misting advisory assumes that your chicken housing is adequately shaded and vented and your birds have some options about where they are going to hang out. If they don't have a lot of options you may have to provide some cooling.

I give my birds a large black rubber dog bowl of water when it gets hot. Got it from the feed store. The chickens like to stand in it to cool off. I just bought a new one the other day and it is much flimsier than my old one. The sides are much floppier than my first bowl. Not sure it's going to work like the old one - it may not hold up to a bunch of chickens perching on the edge. We will see.

That is my beautiful "Chubby Cheeks" a.ka. "Fabio" - here's some more pics. We are sadly thinking about re-homing him or a couple of our silkie roos as we are ending up with too many roosters. We have two silkie roos (one red, one blue - 28 weeks), the EE (also 28 weeks), and a blue cochin who we have just discovered is a roo (8 weeks old) - we need to part with a couple, but I just don't know which ones. He's such a good boy! His baby pic!
I love that you have his baby photo.. I keep thinking of doing that.. It is only a thought..
