Arizona Chickens

GreatWhiteAfro  I would say that the behavior that you described IS normal if you hens/pullets are just learning the ropes. Do you think that the texture on the shells from the busted eggs is rather thin ?  That is also normal in the begining and occasionally through the laying cycle of a hen. When the system is just begining to kick in or slowing down because it need a rest.

Every once in a while one of my hens lays an egg in the middle of the run or coop. Maybe they are caught unaware that it is time to go to the nesting spot. And for some hens the process takes longer to learn. They also are truly creature of habit.
Thanks for the reply. The eggs shells were actually pretty tough. The one I found on the coop floor looked like it had been pecked, not sure who did it though and hope its not a continual thing. Can one bird lay two eggs within a 10 hour period?

we just got home a little bit ago from swim team and some errands. kids went out back to discover one of my beautiful wheaten ameraucanas torn to bits, parts everywhere courtesy of my beagle. I don't know how she got out, but I am soooo mad. my beautiful fluffy faced girl. sucks.

Oh my goodness that is so sad :-(

Please don't be too angry with your beagle, it was just doing what is instinctual. I am so sorry.

It is sad to lose any animal but I must admit that it is just a fact ! I have lost a few to dogs as well. My GS was a rescue from living free in the desert and I am sure that part of her diet had been the ground quail that are indigious to southern CA.

Are the snakes coming up through burrow holes in the ground? Like the ones that ground squirrels make? I have a bunch of those squirrel holes in my backyard, and I would HATE for snakes to use those for a freeway to my chicks! I'm so sorry to hear about your chicks.

More chick pictures. Gosh !! It is so easy to have chicks when the broodies are taking care of them. :love Teeny tinys out and about after one day ! Two different size moms, co broodies in same box. Teeny tiny fuzzy butts Even have a Silkie thrown in the bunch. This one has a beard. Center rear chcik has small bowtie which is favored by me.
Fabulous
