Arizona Chickens

Really dreading the up coming weather. My EE has me worried. She is molting terribly and not acting right. DH and I both checked to see if she was egg bound and nothing. I've read that molting delays if not stops the egg laying process and low producing EE's tend to molt first. Also that molting is harder on their systems then laying an egg. I'd hate for her to go through the molting during this miserable heat. We have been diligent on ways of keeping them cool. Any ideas?? Planning on keeping a close eye on her these next few days.

I finally figured out my watering can problem!! When I was cleaning the rust out of the dish part the other day I realized that the bar that releases the water into the dish is actually copper. I know with our hard water in Az and copper anything will rust and spread rust in the water. DH is finally back from boy scout camp and we can work on a new watering system for the birds soon. I found a 5gl watering system that was pretty neat. It used a 5gal sports jug (like those gatorade ones) and replaced the spicket with a 3 nipple watering valve. I like that the 5 gal sport jug is insulated. Water will stay cooler longer. Darn copper release bar. Oh well, it could be worse.

Copper actually doesn't rust depending on what your definition of rust is. Copper will break down and dissolve if it comes in contact with water and any other metal other than brass. Meanwhile companies are making serious $$$ selling these sharkbite/gatorbite things that will only fail in a couple of years. I suspect that your bar was only copper plated. Copper is to expensive to use on anything it doesn't have to be so it's often plated etc. I think you will be pretty happy with your cooler waterer.

Mesa Feed Barn orders from Ideal Hatchery. I got a boy at the barn and a boy from an Ideal order. That's only 2 out of about 30, though.

Not to shabby, we must be pretty lucky I guess. We more then make up for it with any incubator hatchings though.

Well, that basically confirms my thoughts on the matter. I know I "feel" a temperature difference between my frontyard and backyard, but I always second guess that and tell myself that it's just my imagination. I think it's only a few degrees, but still...

I was aware that neither nutgrass nor crabgrass are true grasses. I never tried the standard weed killers like Round Up. I did try GroundClear, though and it didn't kill it, either. I did the repetitive treatment specifically for it over a course of five years without luck. We have sinced moved from that house, but it popped up at the new house, too. Either way, the problem has been solved. Researching the rye grass, I couldn't find anything negative about it in terms of chicken, so I'm not quite sure what I had read. I'm glad it appears to have been a mistake on my part. I did find where someone had recommended an Omega 3 Chicken Forage Blend from GrowOrganic.Com. I called them and they said that it grows well in Tennessee, Zone 7 and should easily survive both the frost and the summer heat, provided it is adequately watered. I'm going to get a bunch and plant it come fall, so my grass yard should look even more fabulous. I think the photos they posted look amazing!

Hey all,
Remember the person who had her chickens "rescued" while she was on vacation? Well, she's still on vacation so I thought I should update you for her.
The landlady had her chickens. She had stolen them! Unbelievable!
She finally turned them over after threats of media and law enforcement involvement. The chickens are with a friend until she returns.

I 1958/59 I went to camp outside of Tucson. It belonged to friends of my parents. They had a water tank, we had to draw bath water then let it cool so we could bath. We filled the sink with water, used it until it got dirty, or we refilled it after we used it. Don't ask about the toilet. I burned my hand when I washed then the first time. I did not know.

Cooper is also anti-bacterial. Bacteria when they come in contact with certain metals explode on contact. Silver is even better. It was used to preserve milk and a silver coin was used as birth control. Door handles, railings are made with cooper/brass to prevent the spread of germs. Nickel however reacts differently and people can have allergy s, nickel is used to harden softer metals. It is the same with gold. It is believed by some that using silver flatware and serving plates will lack the silver into the foods, and will act as an antibiotic.

Not all metals should be blended, as pointed out with cooper.
