Arizona Chickens

You guys have made me feel 100% better about this situation. I'm really happy you are all so dang supportive too! I haven't heard anything from her or her husband yet. I'm crossing my fingers, toes and dotting my eyes that i don't! She won't be getting anything out of me anyway. After work I went to my Ace Feed/Hardware store and those nice employees gave me a copy of the stores "live chick policy" for ideas. It's not a bad one...you have exactly 48 hrs to report a death of a chick and you will only get a replacement of equal value. I go way back with these guys too, we order chicks for the same ship dates so we can show off our cute chicks in the Post Office parking lot. I set my 24 eggs tonight too! W00t! It's my first time using a Brinsea but hey, i've heard great things.

What did you set?

Hey Guys,

I promise this is the last time I'll ask here (don't want to become annoying), but I figure I'd give it one more try here before trying Craigslist. I have a young buff polish roo I absolutely cannot keep (or I would, I think he's pretty and funny). Would anyone want him? Free of charge, and if you're within a reasonable driving distance (an hour / hour and a half or so of Maricopa) I'll even deliver him if you want this weekend. He has to go before he starts crowing. He's not a particularly people social chicken, but he's never been mean or aggressive in any way... though he is showing just a little too much interest in my girls.. He's hard to catch, but he's a very good bugger. If he doesn't work out for you and you end up eating him. I'm okay with that, though I'd rather not know lol.

Got some better body shots of him this morning, and am re-including the pic of his David Bowie hairdo.

ick! it is!! sadly i guess the state of my yard is worse than i thought. it says the plant grows in pretty poor conditions... its possible there might have been some bird seed put in there a while back, i used to buy all sorts of weird treats for the chickens. yogurt covered millet was a favorite, and peanut butter suet cakes. they only get table scraps and grain now tho.

my yard is a disaster right now. We've been here almost a year and I've done a ton in that time but once it got hot it all went to crap. I just can't do as much and keep up with it in 105 degrees. The previous owner was a single scottsdale club guy and didn't want to take care of anything, so he didn't. When we moved in all the bushes were dead, there was no grass, the drip and sprinkler system didn't work. I fixed the sprinklers and planted annual rye to see if the soil was decent enough that stuff would grow. Around bermuda grass planting time we decided to spend our extra money on other stuff like chickens, so we didn't plant any but there was some dormant in the lawn. I kept running the sprinkers and now almost 1/2 the yard has bermuda grass... the other 1/2 is weeds. I mow the weeds down so from a distance it looks like we have grass... totally NOT grass. The girls like it though... i guess weeds taste better than grass because they always seem to head for the weird leafy mystery plants that are our "grass".

and besides, for a weed Buffalobur is pretty cool looking... I've started letting cat's claw grow up the side of our house. Don't know if someone planted it there at some point and now it's growing because our drips work, or if it's just there as a weed but I think it's neat :) I have to be careful it doesn't get out of control. I've read it can actually do roof damage and stuff, our house is older and has wood trim that's not in the best of shape so I don't want it tearing the place apart.

Yeah, the temp here isn't as bad as the humidity. Makes me remember why I like AZ better than the midwest though most of the time. LOL I love low humidity. The ladies, and Pie are all hanging out in the shade today too. Just filled the wells around the trees and gave them some ice water. Apparently the water around the trees is preferable lol.

Because I am determined to reduce my flock (despite the fact that I have four two month old chicks and three brandnew chicks) I have started to process my hens. Two "PURE" white Ameraucans were my first choice. They were only three years old but a famous for being feather pickers. They are the only hens who do not have bald spots on their back or the side of their necks. The word is that the cause of feather picking is low protein in diet but I believe that bordom is a big factor as well.

Anyway these hens, mother and aunt of "Flower" were full of eggs and would have laid for many more years. But they were also laden with fat around their jointts and on their back under their skin and a large amount iside the abdominal cavity. One had much more than the other. Their organs, heart and etc looked fine. They were overfed with fermented feed and occasional dishes of scrambled eggs to supplement protein. This show me to cut back on the feeding. I wish I could let them free range more. Still have more hens to process.
