Arizona Chickens

Would anyone be interested in Lemon Cuckoo Marans next month? I am planing on getting an Incubator, I found eggs 4 sale. And dose any one have experience with Bielefelders? PM me on the LCM. I will have to order them tomorrow if I am going for it at all.

So while I'm waiting for the organic feed order to come in I was wondering about storage. I read on the label, store in a cool dry place out of the sun. Well here that means indoors. Just wondering where everyone stores theres and if they have had any trouble leaving it outdoors?

I have no secure, weatherproof outdoor storage and since I feed out about 600 pounds a month there is no way I"m buying that many steel barrels. My feed is stacked up in my front room/incubator/storage/office space. When I only had six birds tho I used steel barrels outside by my pen. Set them off the ground so things don't hide under them and the bottoms don't rust out. Tip the rain water off the tops when you see it and occasionally repaint the lids. For just a few birds metal trashcans will also work. Just don't try plastic- the rats & squirrels will just chew right through it.

Set them in the shadiest place you can and keep an eye on the feed. With the high humidity this time of year the metal could sweat and drop condensation on the feed, causing mold. I'm cooler up here and when I had feed in barrels this only happened a couple times.

I have kids with grubby little fingers who always try to get in to everything, so leaving outside is not an option for me. So instead, I keep them in our third car garage, which was converted to an office my the previous owner. They are stored in food grade five gallon buckets with Gamma Seal lids. I have never seen squirrels in this area and mice are few and far between.

I've kept mine outdoors in the shade and thrown a tarp over it when it rains. I've just finished building my new shed so I'll be storing this order in there. Yahoo!

It's next to a door that leads to the backyard right by the coop.
I use those dog food containers that they have a Costco sometimes. It looks like Amazon has a really good price on them:

I have had all of these breeds and you have exactly what you think you have:
1 Production Red pullet
1 Black Australorp pullet
1 Barred Rock pullet
1 Black sex link pullet

Lots of eggs heading your way!  With these breeds it should be closer to 22-24 weeks than 7 months.  Watch for squatting and for their combs to suddenly grow bigger and turn red.
:thumbsup

Also, sounds like you are on the right track with the integration.  It takes awhile.  I have found that if you let them out before dusk and let them find their way back to the coop by themselves they will eventually all end up in the better coop when they are ready.  PRs have always been the biggest bullies to newcomers in my flocks.

thank you Becky!!! I appreciate the info. I will keep my eyes open for that squatting and growing. I sure hope it doesn't take long for my PR's to realize these newcomers aren't going any where.
