wait! They started on the 8th! Been in lock down less then 24 hrs.... Well, when it is time it is time.

Adorable! Congrats! What breed are those? With those dark eggs, marans?

I have powered sulfur. I'll try it! I've never heard of tangle foot, but I'll try it on two saplings that have been stripped completely bare by ants TWICE this summer. I thought the dogs had ripped them out because they were almost invisible without leaves..then I saw the faint outline of twigs.

Oh, I was just googling sulfur on ant mounds, and read that you can also wrap the base of plants with aluminum foil. I imagine for that to work, you'd have to work to keep it as wrinkle free and slick as possible.

Someone is building a chicken coop right off of my morning commute route (right where I'm stuck in traffic and get to stare at their yard). They had a great looking garden this year, and now almost ready for chickens! It's ridiculous, but I'm excited for these strangers!!

Gallo, what do you do about ants in the feeders? I had to hang my feeders to keep the ants out of them. Not sure which is worse - having all the feed contaminated by ants, or having doves and sparrows get a whole bunch of it. If I could figure out how to keep the ants out I'd switch to treadle feeders in a heartbeat.

I was thinking, have you considered a trigger feeder? I think that would be much easier to protect something like that from ants and wild birds too. If you haven't seen them, check out this post and this thread. The feeder would be simple to make and you could even use an old spoon or a spade drill bit for the trigger mechanism, that would make it inexpensive too.

Lady - I am living vicariously through you. I had intentions of building an incubator this summer but it hasn't happened yet. Best of luck on your chicks and keep those pictures coming!!
PS - DH who was initially totally against chickens has now agreed that we will probably get some more when the weather cools and he can build something else. (he's fallen for them
