Arizona Chickens

omg, so sorry, LKD.  Dang, that's rough.  Sweet Pea was almost 4 weeks old?  She probably flew out of the brooder.  Even the tiny ones can get pretty far on flying on fluff.

That could be, but she is more like 3 weeks of fluff. In a couple of jumps or more she could have. Louise just getting the taste for fresh food may have just been trying to get more, and caught her going in.

I have been watching them them as they are now free ranging in a close group of 5. In two weeks the last group should be able to join them. I shall have the grow out ready by them. I will be starting to get going on finishing the pen cover and then joining the old and new coops. This winter I am going to make part of my shed into a coop. They can pick their roost.

I believe I have imprinted myself on my first group of chicks OK, Basil is still wild, will have non of me. I still think Basil will turn out to be a rooster. I hope Dakota is a pullet, she looks at me as a rescuer, and looks for me to make it easy to pick up. Now I have to start working on taming the last group.

Flower,
The girl that has a white under coat has been laying gorgeous olive eggs steadily for days. She is become sweet :)
The black one Sofia, her feathers are comming in very nice.. Still skittish & makes lots of noise when I hold her.. I plan
on having some neighbor kids over to help with that..

Ok, I'm a dad mama, Sweet Pea is no longer with me, :hit she is in  Mary, Lisa, Louise, and Tipsy. :rant I think Louise is the baby snatcher.

This morning my baby's were making a lot of noise, I got up, turned off the alarm and went out side. They were quite, I counted them, the ones that could not get out of the brooder and the other 6 that can...... Only I counted 5 not 6. Sweet Pea was missing. I checked and they couldn't get out of the pen..........???? I looked all over and lessoned, nothing. Then I saw a chase in the fare back corner were the "gang of 4!" Had been huddled. One of them had a leg! :th How?

I just found out. I have been just setting and watching, Louise!, got on top of the pen, slipped down throu an opening. :rant :cd I got her! I closed up the entire top, made the pen smaller but now she can not get in. I am going to have to be very vigilant from now on, now that 4 of them have tasted blood. I have been growing grass in the big grow out pen, I do not know if I have that much time. In about a week the brooder will be to small. The worst thing is I have no idea just how she got out of the brooder??? She would have to have jumped straight up 30" and hit the hole on top perfectly to get out. I have a rug over it now.

There is a reason papa chicken keeps all the other hens a way from Mama and kids!

Oh no! Condolences..
Now who is Louise ? Is it one of your older hens.. ? Or ??

LKD , no matter how perfect your setup is, loss just happens. Try not to feel guilty.

Agreed. If anyone remembers, a few nights again, Procelain, the d'Uccle we got from RedRooster was looking very bad. Well, she's doing significantly better, but when I went to put her back other my other chicks, Oreo, my Splash Marans is mysteriously dead! She was perfectly fine when I locked IP last night.

At least you have an explanation for yours.

Oh man, condolences from us ;( ugh.. You too? Shoot..
& X2! Don't feel guilty, I keep thinking like a farmer. It is just poultry...however it is hard when the chicken is a sweet girl.. Those are hard
to come by.. Our first flock was the sweetest, they always came when they saw me & when I would call.. Now the new ones are just learning
all of my language... I think I am going to get some meal worms.. I plan on feeding them by hand.. We will see..

Louise, formerly Georgina. I think Louise is better, now witch is Thelma

Blondie should respond to "here, chick, chick!" Let me know. She'd always come running for treats when she heard me say that.

Ok, now, did they-- or ---her just cull her or "eat"? & do you know for sure it was Georgia/Louise/Thelma? & what I mean
Is it just one chicken that either culled, still together with feathers or "eaten" like tore up & mangled? Boy there is no way
of saying that right? Ugh,! Sorry again...
