2 red stars
2 ameraucana
2 barred rocks

The barred rocks are for a friend tho. I got 1 of the ameraucana free due to her crossed beak.

She eats OK & is the same size as the others so we will see how it goes. We explained the problem to our daughter & that she maybe dinner someday. She said OK & named her Aunt Chilada (sounds like enchilada)!

Howdy Folks!

I know I've not been around recently (or not even lately) but we're about to order a bunch of peepers.

From the original flock of 28 we have four left (the infamous poultry show virus incident);

The two Gretchens (barred rocks)
Meow - (Production red)
and Princess'es sister (Wellsummer)

We are going to split an order with our backyard neighbors and prolly wind up with a dozen and a half or so peepers.

Not sure if Ideal or McMurry. The state vet (when he came out to check on the girls) mentioned McMurry as the one he'd go with.

Does anyone have a link to the old breeds page. It was set up like a spread sheet with picts and attributes and was all alphabetized. I'd like to share it with out neighbors.

With a little luck you may be seeing me around here a bit more.

Gallo - what's with the name change?

Hey Mikey!

Glad to see you are back. Hope all is well. How goes the remodeling? Sorry to hear about that virus mishap.

Will this help?

Look at the chicken chick's blog - there are many ways to work with a crossed beak. She'll be a great layer!

YAYYYYYY!!!!! Yes I DID make an awesome collage out of the 1541789 pics I took of an egg. It came out a little messy but for a first egg it was a decent size and perfect shape and a beautiful pinkish light brown with lots of white speckling. I think I'm going to blow it out and preserve it.

so precious.

So I've never seen a silkie in person but I heard they are larger than many bantams. I also read a lot of advice about mixing bantams and LF. I've read lots of posts of people successfully mixing them into larger flocks. Would having a single silkie with 6 LF be a bad idea? I'm assuming when mixing LF and bantams you should probably have several bantams so they can band together. Am I wrong? A silkie is one of the birds on my list but I'm not really a bantam fan otherwise so if I got one it would be the only bantam. My RIR is really small though so maybe they could be buddies. Grrrrr I hate being so limited on space, I need to move to a farm lol
i know they can be in a mixed flock but i personally would have 2 so they can be best buddies. i also need to move to a farm :(

I want's some more peepers though...
dont we all? its a complete obsession and if someone says they dont want more i'm not sure i will believe them.

I'm soooo depressed!

Just found out that my three BCMS are all roos. Incidentally, they're not black but blue. I actually prefer the blue color but the roo thing makes me so sad. Now of course I'm sure that ALL my chicks are roos.

At five weeks they're too old for me to introduce new chicks to, right? They're just about to spend their first night in the coop tonight (with heat lamp and shelter.) I don't think I am ready to brood a bunch of babies in my bathtub again... UGH UGH UGH!

how did you determine they are roos? where did you get them? You could get another group of 3 now but you'd have to do the whole brooder box with heat lamp again until they are old enough to go into the coop with the others. I have seen people who have a brooder box with a heat lamp in their coop. They're usually made of wood and have a screen top to prevent the possibility of the lamp falling and catching things including the chicks on fire. It's getting colder at night though so you'd need a decent heat lamp to get the temp up high enough. Here's a thread where people have discussed it.
