Arizona Chickens

So I'm working from home today and one of my chickens, Cadbury, is just throwing an absolute (as loud as possible) tantrum. To the point I thought the neighbors might start throwing things since it was around 8 am. I go down there tell her off, give them all some grapes and hope she quiets down. I look in the coop an Firey is in the "one and only" egg laying spot laying an egg. Cadbury was more or less screeching at her. The bribes seemed to work and I walk away hoping she'll quiet down the noise, but about few min later she starts up again. This girl doesn't even sound like a chicken. I'm not sure what she sounds like, but good golly is she loud. After another 10 min of that I go back down, open the coop, and sure enough she's still screeching at Firey. I was just done with her noise at this point as it was making me a little crazy and I put her in the large cat carrier and put her in the garage. A nice quiet "time out" if you will. I came back for her about an hour later and she'd laid her egg and was happy to quietly re-join the others. I then picked up the eggs that the others had laid and went back in.

I have no idea why the chickens are convinced there is only, and i mean only, one place to lay eggs, but they have. Apparently Cadbury doesn't like standing in line waiting for "the spot".

LOL they certainly are picky. Do you have more than one nest box? So far I have evidence of interest in both of our boxes but when the day comes both have chosen the same box. If Phillie lays today it will be afternoon and Onyxia lays every day around 10am so hopefully we won't have any fighting. I've heard of hens sharing the same box at the same time which I think is funny.

Yay Lil' Phil! My second egg layer.

Phillie's egg compared to Onyxia's first egg that was laid last week (Phil's on left)

and compared to Onyxia's 7th egg laid today (Phil's on left)

Ony's first one had a lot of white speckling that has since been lost, I'm assuming Phil's will lose that white speckling too but I may be able to tell them apart as it looks like Phil's will be a lighter pinker brown than Ony's. We'll see in a week or so.

YAY Phillie!!! You haven't eaten Ony's first egg yet?? What are you waiting for?! Oh, I know so you could take all those comparison pictures!! LOL I only have 20 more weeks to go until my first!

Ony's egg is actually blown out. It wasn't the first one of hers I ate but I did eat it. I'm still not sure if I'm going to save all of their first eggs, I had plans to make little holders to display them but not sure if I still want to since I accidentally broke the piece off of Ony's. I had read if you put a bandaid over the end when you poke the needle through it helps prevent cracking around the hole but when I went to peel off the bandaid it peeled off part of the shell

The holders I planned to make would probably cover the hole though so I still might do it.

So I was getting a salad and a green juice at our local healthy fast-food place and it occurred to me... What are they doing with all that organic pulp and leftover wheat grass? Just throwing it away, ten bags a day, that's what! They kindly gave me some and now the chicks are munching away on yummy carrot/kale/beet/tons of random fruit and veggie bits. Nice treat, right? Could any harm come from it? I've got about ten lbs of it in my fridge.

If you're in Scottsdale, Grabba Green (FLW and 101) is the place.

Great idea. I never even knew that place was there, it's right down the street from me. I'm going to be working part time at the Target across the street from there starting next week. I'll have to check that place out. I'm always looking for quick places to grab food since I'm ovo-pescetarian and most fast food places are pretty crappy with selection if you don't want meat or cheese.

SO chicken noob question. The temps have changed pretty drastically here the last few days. All (but I think one or two) of my chickens is laying eggs, and the others should be here shortly. I don't have a heat lamp, but I'm cold, so I'm thinking they may be. Is it necessary to get a heat lamp for them, or should they be fine? I didn't know anyone who ran one in Iowa... but all the chickens I knew in Iowa were yard chickens, and really only like 2 ppl had farm chickens.

What, exactly, is the difference between "yard chickens" and "farm chickens"?
