Arizona Chickens

Hey everyone!
Brewing a hefeweizen right now after a long day at work.
The girls are all over the yard.
Classic rock mix kicking on the garage stereo.
Modus Hoperandi IPA in my glass.

Hope everyone is good!

SO chicken noob question.  The temps have changed pretty drastically here the last few days.  All (but I think one or two) of my chickens is laying eggs, and the others should be here shortly.  I don't have a heat lamp, but I'm cold, so I'm thinking they may be.  Is it necessary to get a heat lamp for them, or should they be fine?  I didn't know anyone who ran one in Iowa... but all the chickens I knew in Iowa were yard chickens, and really only like 2 ppl had farm chickens.

No I do nt believe they need a lamp here in Arizona.. I don't give our one..

I have a little RIR - we call Little Red - who is tiny comparatively - and she only lays once in a great while but often passes membrane without egg yolk, shell, etc Because she has such a personality I've just let it be. I've watched over her and notice she is getting bigger and happier - who knows what will happen.
Try adding apple cider vinegar to her water, and making oyster shell available, possibly even mix ome into her food, and see if that doesn't help with the eggs. If not, there is a bird supplement called Nekton MSA that should help.

I'm hoping to get to the fair next weekend. According to the animals on display calendar poultry is 16-20th as well as llamas, sheep and angora goats. If anyone plans to go next weekend maybe we can have a BYC meet up at the fair. We can talk chickens over deep fried butter on a stick.

So I'm working from home today and one of my chickens, Cadbury, is just throwing an absolute (as loud as possible) tantrum. To the point I thought the neighbors might start throwing things since it was around 8 am. I go down there tell her off, give them all some grapes and hope she quiets down. I look in the coop an Firey is in the "one and only" egg laying spot laying an egg. Cadbury was more or less screeching at her. The bribes seemed to work and I walk away hoping she'll quiet down the noise, but about few min later she starts up again. This girl doesn't even sound like a chicken. I'm not sure what she sounds like, but good golly is she loud. After another 10 min of that I go back down, open the coop, and sure enough she's still screeching at Firey. I was just done with her noise at this point as it was making me a little crazy and I put her in the large cat carrier and put her in the garage. A nice quiet "time out" if you will. I came back for her about an hour later and she'd laid her egg and was happy to quietly re-join the others. I then picked up the eggs that the others had laid and went back in.

I have no idea why the chickens are convinced there is only, and i mean only, one place to lay eggs, but they have. Apparently Cadbury doesn't like standing in line waiting for "the spot".
Do you have more than one nest box? You need several if you have more than one hen. There is often a favoured spot, but as long as others are available, it helps.

So I was getting a salad and a green juice at our local healthy fast-food place and it occurred to me... What are they doing with all that organic pulp and leftover wheat grass? Just throwing it away, ten bags a day, that's what! They kindly gave me some and now the chicks are munching away on yummy carrot/kale/beet/tons of random fruit and veggie bits. Nice treat, right? Could any harm come from it? I've got about ten lbs of it in my fridge.

If you're in Scottsdale, Grabba Green (FLW and 101) is the place.
SCORE! You done good!
