Arizona Chickens

ctroyer and Arizonachicken, congratulations! I hope you get a blue egg today. I'm very envious of the New Hampshires! All mine turned out to be roos.

Thanks Gallo! I am guessing the blue egg will be at least a week later since she is a week younger than the RIR and BR. We'll have to see. Just waiting for the BR to start laying and hopefully we stay on the every other day schedule. That would be plenty of eggs for the wife and I.

Oh look!

Nice..

So, the egg production has really dropped off. We went from 7-8 eggs everyday since they started laying in June to only 5 on a good day and most days only 4.
I have noticed a lot of feathers in the run.
Other than the weather, nothing else has changed. Same food and so on.
They were hatched last week of January so they are nearly 10 months.
???

Moulting?

We got our second egg yesterday. It appears only one of the girls is currently laying. Here is a comparison of a store bought free range, cage free, pastured raised organic egg and ours. Not quite as big yet but I was surprised that this being only the second egg it is very close. Ours is on the right. Looking forward to another week when our Amrerecauna starts laying the blue eggs. I had read many stories of the first eggs being soft shelled and small. We will be having egg sandwiches for breakfast tomorrow!
Our first eggs were pointed at the smaller end... Along with smudges of blood.. Then about 1 week into laying they started to round out. Just so beautiful... Thank you for posting photos...

I was surprised by how clean they were. The second egg had one little spot on it but other than that they were perfectly clean. Of course the nesting box looks like a tornado went through it after them laying eggs and is quite funny. But I guess I would do the same if I was plopping out an egg.

She's still sitting tight. There were three fluffed out chicks exploring the nest box this morning. They are precious.

I haven't been able to candle any of the eggs so I have no idea how many are even fertile. She had 13 eggs under her before they started hatching. The first three chicks are early. They weren't due to start hatching until late last night. I'll give her a couple of days before removing any unhatched eggs.
