Arizona Chickens

MaddBaggins,

I have a pair of drum table units and want to put one out on the back patio, but when it rains, it pours. They have some type of feaux leather (sp) inlaid top and have two 10" woofers and four tweeters at all four corners to give that "surround" sound. You can buy a matching cabinet to split the stereo signal at the flip of a switch, plus additional record storage. They really sound nice, and have Aux inputs for whatever external devices you choose. Just open the doors and pull out the turntable/receiver combo...really neat. They're stored out in the garage for now, because there are at least 10 HUGE consoles in the camp already.

Sorry, not chicken related, but relaxing on the back patio watching chicken antics, listening to some good music and enjoying a few cold ones is like paradise.

Oh, someone did inquire about what breeds I was interested in, and I'm considering Delawares as my first choice, because they lay large eggs and are extremely friendly, and my second choice would be the Australorps or maybe some type of Red Sex Links, ISA Browns, etc.. --BB

I have mostly fond memory's of the hi-fy, it raw alway playing something. My dad was varied then my mother. On summer she kept playing "itsy-bitty-yellow polka dotted bikini" over and over, I took it fishing with me. Someday, when the lake fills with silt, archaeologist will find it, if they can figure out what it is hd play it? What will they think? What picture will they have of us? Will they even know what a bikini is?
Back in the 60's, I remember listening to music on something like this... If you disconnect the external speakers, there are two speakers in the front panel on either side of the carrying strap. The things weighs about 30 pounds, and they called that thing "portable" back in the day. This actually came with a set of "stilts/stands" if you didn't want to use it as a tabletop. --BB

I have a small patch of grass just laid down this past spring. I think I want to overseed with rye. I didn't make it out to Lowe's this weekend, so I'll have to get in done this coming weekend. Hope it's not too late.

Finished up my winter garden yesterday, and fenced it all from the chickens. I made 4 spots for them to dust bathe in, instead of the garden beds, so I hope that helps to deter them from finding a way into the beds. I made a big scarecrow (Scarecrow Sally) yesterday--right now she's out front for Halloween, but she'll be moved into the garden soon. I don't really know the point of Sally, but maybe she'll...I don't know? Make me laugh?

The meaties are doing great. They love getting out and exploring the compost pile and hanging out in the straw. Man, I thought they were stinking really badly, but turns out a big spiny lizard was dead behind the straw bales.

Gallo, the rooster is stunning. Great score on the cisterns.

Desertmarcy--good luck with the moringa seeds. You found them on ebay?

LKD, congrats on all the eggs, too bad about your favorite chicks being males. Such a bummer.

I still only have 2 layers, but that's enough for our family egg consumption. I really want to get rid of the 2 grey Polish/silkie girls I have, but my daughter says no. Ugh. Oh, one of the grey girl's comb is devil-horned. Weird looking. I wonder if that's a Polish thing? I'll have to look it up. ETA: Looked it, V-comb, is a characteristic of Polish.

I used almost all of my chicken coop compost this weekend in the garden beds. It seemed broken down--pine shavings, sand, poop, and pine pellets, but I'm not sure--could be pretty woody despite looking great. I figured my winter garden absolutely could NOT do any worse than this year's summer garden, so what the heck. Didn't have to buy a single bag soil, which was super fab.

Finally overseeded with rye grass today. We had a debate to lock up the chickens until it takes hold or to not lock up the chickens. We decided to get an extra small bag of seed and attempt it leaving the chickens out and spot seed where they destroy it most. The last time we seeded we had a million wild birds in the yard eating the seed, the chickens keep the wild birds away but they scratch the ground up a lot more than the wild birds. We figure 4 chickens scratching and eating seed is the lesser of 2 evils vs 100 wild birds.

We use a flood light at night to seed the lawn.. When the wild birds are sleeping they have "literally" NO IDEA that the seed is even there..
Been doing that for 4-5 years now.. It totally works.. Problem solved..

A great read about the humble but regal chickens we call pets (well, some of us at least.

ooo great idea, we have 2 flood lights right on the corner of the back of the house where the grass is. I think if we position them at the grass they shouldn't disturb the neighbor if we leave them on. The chickens have been enjoying the grass seed feast all morning but no wild birds so far this year :).
