Arizona Chickens

No,but I like this.. Did you find someone that sells it.?
I did! I stopped by The Stock Shop at 67th Ave. and Thunderbird (Glendale or Peoria, NW Valley) and they sell packet of Gro-Gel there!

But, be sure to ask them for it - it was kind of out of the way, not near the other chick supplements, or supplies. Kind of odd, tucked away in the back???

So YES - it is sold locally! Tuck that info away for next time you order chicks in the mail. :)

I went out to check on the pips.. 2 look good almost out, 1 looks like the air sack was
in the wrong spot.. This was the only egg from flower.. The olive layer.. I pulled back
part of it to see of it moved, none.. I put the chick back in just in case.. This is only
the 2nd time we have hatched from a hen..
How long untill I could help by pulling the shell back?

I sure wish we could do the Tour de Coops but alas we are too far away and have much to do this weekend. My girls just refuse to let me take their pictures. They usually have their backs turned with butts in the air foraging through the grass. They have discovered the inside of my tiki bar which has a nice shelf for playing around. One day they even all managed to make it to the top of the bar! Here they are at 7 weeks. I am grateful I ended up with all pullets. My little Lemon who I was so worried about is still the same, she just has a pinker face as she is developing than her sisters.

This may sound harsh, but I would not help the chick at all. If it cannot get out on its own there is a reason, and if you help it and the chick survives you are very likely to have a weak chicken. The best way to breed healthy birds is to keep only the strong, healthy ones. If you coddle the weak ones and keep breeding from them your birds will, over time, become weaker and more sickly. This goes for backyard flocks of mutts as well as for standard-bred birds.

I think you'll find it very interesting.  I used to go to our Tucson Aquaponics Meetup.   If you ever find yourself in Tucson, come by and see my system.

I am curious to visit Tucson since I have never been there.  LKD and I have tenative plans to visit on our way to Carlsbad  The Caverns. So it is possible that we could visit before the cooler weather is over.

Well, you two have a standing invitation then.  I hope you can see the bats!  Observing them emerging at night is truly awesome.

I just learned, from 91.5 FM, Science Friday, that bats are disappearing, down as much as 90% in some states. A fungus is killing them. It is in Europe also, but the bats there are able to fight off the fungus . Scientist are working at finding a byway to treat wild bats. They are very important to have.

I got our EE from Pratt's. She is 13 months old. She squats, sits in the nest box daily and has given us a total of 6 green eggs over the last 6 months. I hope you have more success than we have from our Pratt's mutt.
You have far more patience than I do!! If Big Red doesn't start laying by the end of the month, I don't know that I can justify the cost to feed her. Yesterday, she was in one nest box while Blackie was in the other one actually laying an egg (12th in 13 days), so I got my hopes up, only to have them dashed yet again!! But, her personality does seem to be changing, getting friendlier, and this morning when I touched her back, she dropped right down into "the" position. Just knowing I'm not the only one will a slow EE from Pratt's makes me feel better! Next spring, we will probably add a couple more pullets to the flock, but I won't be buying them from Pratt's!!!!

Yes, pipemum I wondered if that was what you were referring to when explaining it to Roostereggs. It surrounds 3 sides of the base of my tiki bar, I live in the hottest part of the state and it has been in place since my daughter's 21st birthday party in 2002. It is a little threadbare towards the bottom but has held up in our brutal conditions quite well. I tried to find some better pictures of it, but the one I took from inside the bar shows it very well. You are right is is relatively inexpensive at Lowe's. I can't wait to hear the chicken hater saga!
My chicks are growing up for sure! They even put themselves to bed with only a bit of prodding from us. They are all very happy and healthy and they get along great. So much fun to have!
Pastrymama, I sure wish I could take some of those layers off your hands, but I simply don't have the room to accommodate them. I hope someone comes through for you.
I am ready to switch my girls' feed from starter to ???? Is there something they eat before they go on layer feed at around 18 weeks? Something with less protein than chick starter?
You all that have been waiting for eggs, ugh! I hope that doesn't happen to me and my Pratt's birds. I can't imagine only 6 eggs in 6 months. I don't have nearly that much patience.
Twinklin, did you ever find hidden eggs in the yard when your other two took the day off without notice? How are Eleanor's eggs looking now? Hopefully everyone is back on schedule now.
