Arizona Chickens

Looking for ideas, please!

Just said goodbye to my last two boys.

They went to an excellent home though, so I should be thrilled. I feel fortunate that Arizona has such an amazing chicken keeping community!

I'm down to six, 18 week old hens and I am adding a new wing to the coop on Tuesday so of course I'm already thinking about adding some new chicks. (embarrassed face goes here!)

I could do four more, I think?

Definitely an easter egger or two, a white silkie to replace my boy and ? Maybe a Frizzle? Or a Polish? Something really fun to look at, I think. I don't care that much about egg production. I just want a fun menagerie. Recommendations?

My husband will not be thrilled! hahahah

Give it some time to gather its strength. It takes a lot of energy to peck your way out of an eggshell. If you don't see any obvious deformities and the chick is standing and stretching on its own, it will probably be fine.

I had humidity problems in my incubator on my last two hatches (they overlapped time in the incubator so both hatches were affected). Got no chicks on the first hatch. Four eggs hatched out of the second group, right on schedule, but the two that hatched late in the day had problems. The first two chicks are bouncing happily around the brooder. The third chick had curled toes and could not open its feet or stand properly. Broke my heart but I had to cull it. The last chick was tiny and still had a lot of its yolk sac unabsorbed. It managed to get out of the shell but died a couple of hours later. The other four eggs didn't even pip. I'm relieved that the two chicks are doing well. Wasn't sure what I was going to do if only one chick survived. They need company.

Yay! Got my 1st egg from one of my EE's...America was hatched in July & gave me a green egg!! Now I have a golden lakenvelder, RIR, buff laced polish & EE that are laying! The polish hasn't laid since we got down to freezing but the others lay everyday!! Only 11 hens to go & my whole flock will be layers (except my 2 roosters..lol). Gonna start breeding my Russian Orloffs when she starts laying, and getting some meaties in the spring!

hi to all my fellow zonies...

we are in Palominas...near Sierra Vista/Bisbee area....and are planning to start our chicken adventure this spring. Which breeds are successful in our climate. Our goal is to have lots of eggs (like everyone) and a breed that is also good to eat once their laying days are done. I'm open to advice/suggestions and doing lots of research.

Thanks for all the great posts...

Thanks for the info, Magic. The dried so I switched them to the brooder. They are both peeping like mad. I am trying to get them to eat some mash, but they show no interest. I have electrolytes in their water, but am giving it to them via eye dropper because they show no interest in that either. The small one seems to be doing much better, tottering around. However, Thing One now doesn't seem to be able to stand. There are no obvious leg deformities. No, spraddle leg or curled toes, athough one leg does seem to go back further than the other when he tries to stand. Perhaps I should try taping his legs/feet? I am praying I don't have to cull it. It will just break my heart. :hit

Had a dream last night that all the girls had started laying, but they laid them out in the open in random places. It was like an Easter egg hunt! LOL! They aren't quite there yet, but I hope soon. Two of them are 20 weeks old now. Keep expecting an egg, but nothing.

Mine are 16 weeks - all 4 of them. I will be anticipating eggs at 22-28 weeks maybe?? I ordered straw for the nest boxes today to start them getting a clue as to what those are for. Mine still have very pale/blond combs and no wattle growth to speak of at all.

Welcome to all the new peeps. Congrats on the hatching peeps. Pics of my Peeps. They were flapping crazy today . My EE's are beginning to lay again after their molt. Pretty blueish egg.

I had some last spring hatch from extra large eggs from an older hen, they would have one or both legs straight out behind or straight out in front of them Couldn't walk. Several of them I set them in small ceramic cups to keep them up right so they weren't flopping around and getting pecked on by the others. Gave some ACV water and basically just waited, took them out a couple times a day and some of them were finally able to get their legs under them in 24-36 hours. A couple were still bad so had to be culled; mostly because I work a full time job and no one to care for them most of the day. Had I been able to stay home and hand feed/water them they might have made it too. If it's not too bad you might just wait and see.

You have a chicken guy right there; Keith Rae; sorry I don't have his contact info handy; think he's on Palominas road... seems like by the school or past it. Sorry, been more than a year since I was there. He is doing very well with his Silver Laced Wyandottes at the show this year
