Arizona Chickens

Flower came in last night, it is so nice having her here. I Flower enjoys a glass of wine ever so often, so I thought it would be nice to pick up a bottle of table wine. I know nothing about wine. I as I searched the shelves at the grocery store I became more confused by my lake of knowledge....... :ya Erika! I found it!

How could I go wrong......... They even have Free Range Red. It was actually pretty good. Not very complex but a really nice table wine. We found it at Sprouts on sale, in whites, reds and pink wine................

Anyone know of where I can purchase some standard bred buff orpington chicks in Arizona?  I bought some from the feed store but they are smaller than the standard bred.  Looking to increase my flock with the bigger birds.  All the companies and hatcheries won't ship less than 15 birds and I don't need that many now.

Hatchbawks usually has them.  There are just tough to get ahold of and take a while to respond to emails and phone calls.

Be careful buying from them. I got my buff from them, she is smallish also. But what you need to look for is health issues. They have a lot of unhappy customers. I think they get theirs from all over and resells them. Check them for mites first, around vent, under wings...... If you find 1 there are hundreds, if you find 5 it is infested. Of course with any bird you need to check over and buyer beware. Check around some one might want to go in with you on an order, then you can sell any surplus. You probably will not make anything but you will have your birds. Some hatcheries are better then others. Ask people with experience. Such as mine with Hatchbawks. Not a good reputation. But has had a few good pullets. I prefer to play Russian Roulette with only one chamber with a bullet, not 5 out of 6 loaded.

As Maryhysong mentioned in her earlier reply to your inquiry (post 42778), she and cbnovick are working with some good standard bred buff orpingtons and they expect to have birds available in the fall. If the available-in-fall birds are like what they brought to the Tucson poultry show in November, they would be worth the wait. Both of those breeders are in Arizona.

If you are in a hurry stick with the hatchery stuff. If you truly want good, standard bred birds, odds are you will have to wait for them. No matter where you get them. And if you truly want good birds, get the older juveniles. Or a breeding trio. You will have a much better idea of what you are getting than if you get young chicks. Just saying.

I purchased all 12 of my baby chicks from hatchbawks. All were normal size without any issues. Only problem which really isn't their fault was that my 2 light brahmas were roosters. My only issue with them is their inability to respond in a timely manner to phones and emails. Most of the home breeders seem to be real slow to respond, not the best way to run a business.

X2. Good birds are worth waiting for.

Well you kind of said it yourself above. They are home breeders, not necessarily a business. Most home breeders are like myself, doing everything, no employees. Chicks and birds sold are generally excess or extras hatched to help pay expenses, but not in business to make money. More a hobby. That said, I always get back to people promptly, especially if it is email.

@LadyKotaDoria Thank you for your video...I love how that chicken just decides to hop off and on the camera.

I just lost my first chick and I *really* needed a LOL first thing today! :)

Our first flock is older and not very friendly...one of the reasons I incubated...so they would be used to us caring for them. If they are hatched under a broody, are they too skittish to pick up?
