Arizona Chickens

just caught up on 300 posts. been busy this march but its finally spring break! maybe i can get some work done around this place.

LKD my condolences on the loss of your mother, i cannot imagine. my mom moved out here after surgery to remove her cancer. i am greedy about my time with her.
AZKat how is your baby girl? every time i see your avatar i think of pregnant you, but that was some time ago, haha.
i have the britetap water system and i liked it, but the water in the reservoir gets hot, even tho we put ice in the cooler. i dont know if i will use it this year - probably will, but with back up as usual. i have a cat litter pan i fill every day for them to lay in and get all muddy gross. i am interested in the cups tho, and eventually when i irrigate this yard i might put in something more permanent.

i dont remember all the posts i read but welcome to all the new members and all the chicks.

Hey girl, I was just talking about you today.. We so want to go camping!! Have you been?? Yeah spring break was way to fast.. Our camper
is in the shop.. I really wanted to do roasted marshmallow this evening & invite ya all, but the wind.. Yuck..

I hard boiled our girls eggs for the first time. I now see why people say fresh eggs are impossible to peel. I used our oldest eggs from the fridge which were about 2 weeks old. I've never had an issue hard boiling and peeling store bought eggs so they must be REALLY old at the store. In any case I remember people mentioning egg steamers so I went to Bed Bath and Beyond and found the Cuisinart Egg Central. It only does like 10 eggs at a time but it worked perfectly. Perfectly cooked and super easy to peel. It wasn't like the steamers I had seen people post pics of. It looks like a metal egg. It supposedly also cooks eggs other ways which I have yet to try. I recommend it. http://www.cuisinart.com/products/specialty_appliances/cec-10.html

I found a very easy way to hard boil fresh eggs. Start you water to bring to a boil. While waiting flip your eggs so the large side is up and use a thumb tact to pierce the egg shell. Try not to pierce the membrane but if you do it is ok. Once the water is boiling place the eggs in softly. Boil for 16minutes then place in a nice bath immediately for 15 minutes. They peel easily and most the time comes off in two pieces. And the eggs are so much better than any hardboiled egg I have had. Moist not dry.

Ok I will try that.. But I am telling ya.. I was seriously almost in tears the time before last tring to peel the eggs.. I think that maybe it is the timing?& putting them in at boil. I usually put them in at the beginning.. I do have a steamer that I tried with the poke. They were still hard to get out, then the next batch we cooked a
bit longer, did the poke, waited, then added ice.. It was better, but not in a two peel method you mentioned.. Thanks. :woot

My chicken coop Several areas for quarantine. Really small area by the coop, larger area to the left and then the whole back yard, and finally the whole 5 acres free range.
Wow, how wonderful.. You have room for a dairy cow..:highfive:
A Miniature Jersey perhaps or an Irish Dexter? Perfect, fresh cottage cheese, fresh whole raw milk, fresh butter ( salted or not). 1 to 1.5 gals a day. Yum!
