Arizona Chickens

so I finally can tell whos the barred rock and whos the black australorp... lol my favorite two are both of them lol.. i love the barred rock a lil more.. she always hops right in my hand and lays down the moment i stick my hand in there.. if she isnt present when i put my hand in the black australorp climbs onboard... i think im gonna name the barred rock Charlotte... and the black australorp gypsy :)

That's funny - our Black Australorp is my favorite. Shh don't tell the others.

She always jumps in my lap when I'm sitting outside. When I'm feeding the bunnies, she jumps on top of their hutch just looking for a hand out. One day, I was leaning over in the yard pulling weeds and she jumped up on my back and walked up to my shoulder. That one freaked me out a little. I wasn't prepared. She is the friendliest of the three we have.

I worked in and spent hours in my garden this weekend. After surveying the wreckage and devastation that the chickens have caused, the lost veggies, and the horribly ugly fencing and contraptions I've used on every green thing in my garden, my pathetic tiny lawn that is covered in poop and flies and no longer people friendly, I have finally decided to fence the chickens from my garden. I though we could all co-exist, but no, no, and no. So, that's my next chicken related project. I've been resistant to fencing the chickens in their own spot (that'll be 3 interior fences that I have now), but I think I can make a nice one out of free pallets. At max, it's 15' feet of fencing, so I think it can be done inexpensively no matter what we use. I used this with matching gates to enclose the garden and chicken area currently, and it's gorgeous and sturdy.

Anyway, I'm excited about the fencing project and reclaiming my garden. The chicken area already has a new dust bath set up, a hay bale to destroy, a compost pile to rife through, and like Gallo does, I'll set down some sod for them for the spring and early summer.

Garden related, I picked up a Josefina pomengranate from Desert Survivors and an elderberry! And a ton of other native and non-native plants throughout nurseries in Tucson. I think my budget is shot for the year, but fruit trees remaining on my list are Rio grapefruit, another fig (not sure which variety, I have a black mission), anna's apple and ein shiemer apple, 2 peach trees...I think that might be all my yard can handle.

Sorry for serial posting, a lot going on this weekend. I butchered 3 CX this weekend. 6 weeks old, and processed only weighed 2.5lbs! I thought they were much bigger than that. 3 more CX left. They are slow to grow because I only feed 2x a day. If they were getting out more, I'd leave food in their pen, but between coyotes, hawks, and preserving my garden, I've only been letting them out for 15 minutes in the morning, and 30-45 minutes in the evening, which is just not enough free ranging time to justify stuffing their faces all day.

Also, Twinklin, just read your headliner. Great job telling your story!

Apparently I forgot to post the chicks??

Thank you for posting..
When you have time will you post up the chicks from us? They are a mix of our 1st hatch.. Rooster & 2 hens, plus the girls we got from Flower
& maryhysongs girls.. we would love to see how they have grown.. Hope to be able to tell which hen they came from..

We just put the last hatched baby under Moma hen last night, the one & only single survivor from the U.P.S. misshap. Hacthury Ameraucana..
Little cutie is bearded, my favorite..
Since this whole broody Moma, ordering eggs/incubator/our eggs was off a week, we hope to do it better next time.. Example.. The extra chicks
from Pratts, that were sick are keeping to themselves.. They have not integrated with the other chicks.. They do have eachother but I still feel as
though I should of known better.. Plus the eggs that were shipped "NEVER AGAIN!!!" are a week in age difference.. So this new chick that we
just placed last night is going to be by it's self untill the whole peeking order works it self out.. Which never ends..
The best part is that the whole flock gets to experience new babies. AND we don't have to raise the chicks... That is a lot of work..

Hello my fellow Az peeps.... I know, that was a terrible pun. Anyone live anywhere close to Oracle, Az? I may be looking to rehomed a gorgeous little Delaware cockrel if SHE (sexed by Mcmurray) turns out to be a HE. This baby is very nice and is one of the first ones to come and eat out of my hand. I will probably know for sure in a week or two what sex this baby is. Let me know if anyone is interested, there are pics on my profile page.

Glad you are on here! &. :welcome if this is your first post...

Delaware's are so beautiful.. The photos look almost unreal.. Hope that you have a hen.. What other breeds do you have?
