Arizona Chickens

welcome-byc.gif
and to AZ. We are also transplants from NY. I'm from Long Island and my husband was born in AZ but grew up in a small town in upstate NY. We are relatively new to raising backyard chickens and have been enjoying every minute of it. I have really wanted to raise a few turkeys but am concerned about noise and their roosting habits as we live in a HOA neighborhood. I think with the chickens and rabbits we are currently raising, we are fortunate not to have any problems in that regard. Am hoping my father in law will agree to let me keep a couple of turkeys at his place. His area has alot of people who own horses, there shouldn't be an issue with turkeys. Just have to build them something safe. The White Mountains sounds like a lovely place to live. Especially as our temps are already creeping up past the 80's down here in the valley. Hoping you enjoy your new chapter in life.

we are new to the AZ area. We are up in the white mountains, moved here from NY. Right now we have 22 chickens, not sure how many hens/ros, since most are straight run. We are getting ready to hatch more also. I dont think we will raise tukerys here, main reason I cant find any. We raised them in NY along with our chickens.

I'm hatching turkeys here in Tucson.

they are doing great! put them outside for the first time today.. gave them crickets over the weekend.. they are happy as i can be!! and so am i.. however they are loosing their fuzz and getting in their feathers so when they hop around alot you can seee fuzz flying lol
Lol, letting them go outside is my favorite part. They're so cute when they begin to lose their feathers I don't know why

I've got eight hens and one five-month-old pullet in the girls' coop. I get 4-6 eggs most days. Today I got nine eggs! Looks like the two slackers finally got into gear and the pullet started laying, all at the same time. Sweet!

Building first coop...

Those of you who use the misting system in your coop, do you have a problem with mold inside? Don't want to fix heat problem just to cause another one.

Also, I want to build a water system with the chicken nipples. Should I put water spouts in coop or just out in the attached run? If I have water nipples in the coop, will the water that the chickens drip cause mold?

I read on one of the other posts that the coops get very humid from the chickens. Will any of the above make that worse? Or is that not a problem in Az since it's so dry?

Thanks!!

When I use a mister, it's only in the shaded run. I have water access in both the coop and the run. If the nipples are from a quality manufacturer and installed correctly they should never drip. Your coop should have large amounts of ventilation, even more so if you live at a lower elevation and with sufficient ventilation you shouldn't ever have problems with moisture. If you check out "My Coop" page just under my avatar as well as others you'll get an idea of the amount of ventilation we typically have.
