Arizona Chickens

I don't think the timer has that capability. it has 4 start times, so you could get 2 hours misting every 15 minutes. Not quite several hours, but a couple hours!
Thanks everyone for sharing about the timer. I will have to look for that one next HD trip; I have already picked up drip line and mister nozzles; mine will be at the top of the building on the outside, to help cool the air going into the chicken house (which is 12x24, open along the 24' side) Already have shade cloth on that side. In the past our usual high for the summer is a few days of 105-110 but last year we had a day of 115.

Since we are cooler than the valley I"m thinking I could set the timer to come on about 2:00 for say 15 min, then off for 30 min then back on for 15, ect. With four cycles it would run from 2 until 430. If I work a day shift I'm usually home by 5 and let them out to range until dark anyway. I could also monitor temps and run it manually for another round or two if necessary. But we are lucky up here; it starts cooling off most of the time as soon as the sun is going down and night temps are comfy except a few nights where it may stay in the high 80s.

also when you are looking at mister nozzles, check the gallons per hour; the ones sold in the patio kits use at least a gallon; the ones over in the irrigation supplies use .5-.8, that can make a big difference in the water bill!

Hi y'all ! So happy I found this thread ! Im new to BYC , but not new to chickens. I've lurked all day, so Im all caught up.... : )
Im in Tucson, near the zoo. We have a small flock of chickens, a herd of New Zealand white rabbits, doing the tilapia and aquaponics thing...have a pack of dogs and a gazillian kids and grandkids under foot. oh. Cant forget the cats. We have those too. Doing some serious thinking about adding a pair of miniature goats to the craziness, but haven't taken the plunge.
According to some web sites, I am doing everything wrong. My chickens are mostly free range. My rabbits are also. Chicken feed? (the chickens look at me as if to say "you expect us to EAT that?") Rabbit feed...again..." *&^%$#@ " . Its always put out there, but I think the wild birds eat most of it. I hit up Market On The Move on a regular basis. What we don't stuff down our faces, goes to the critters. Dogs and cats eat a lot of raw stuff too.
Oh and I was one of those moms that spanked their kids when they needed it and told them all they were my favorite. My grandkids now get this illustrious treatment. I look forward to reading all the goings on , knowing Im not the only insane person in the Old Pueblo

Thanks for all the info!

My pet rabbits have always free ranged in our yard, and I never lost a single one to heat. Don't have any now, but if I did, they would free range.

We raised them here in Tucson and like K9Dave said having raised hutches and shade is imperative. Also you can freeze water bottles to put in their cages. We kept ours in a rabbit tree (a building) with a fan and misters as rabbits can get heat stroke fast. Other than that they are very easy to raise.

You can also dig pits in the ground and raise rabbits in them. It can be cooler down a ways and you can put nice shady covers over them.

Welcome to BYC! I'm just north of you in "old" Marana. Used to live out at Diamond Bell Ranch and drove thru Picture Rocks every day, finally moved up here to be close to work.
Hang with the crowd here, you can pick up a lot of info!

Thanks for the welcome. Do you know anyone in Tucson who has blue Marans? I'm looking for some hatching eggs.

I don't know her personally, but a poster on here named desertmarcy breeds marans, but I'm not sure if she does blues. Look back a few pages and find a post by her, then send her a private message.

I am considering Buffalo Grass for the yard. Anyone have any experience with it? Also need advice on what to grow on the chicken run wire for shade? I would like something, prob a vine or something to grow rapidly and cover the south fence of their run to cool the area off and give them a break from the brutal sun. Thanks
People have used grape vines, the bottom the girls will eat, but only as high as they can reach, so they have to be protected until they gain some height. There are a number of other vines. I love Cecil Bruener, it is a rose, comes in pink, white and yellow, maybe other colors but I haven't seen them.

Once they get long enough, again, the chickens will eat what they can get. It has tiny thorns, so you need gloves as you train it to go where you want it to. Beautiful and cooling. If you design it right, chicken will find it cool and a very safe place to hide and a safe place for a nap. I had one that grow fast and had abundant flowers.
