And thank you. I know he will be fine. If he isn't, the worst case scenario would be that we pull him out. However...
Just talked to a friend and... another really nice school has been added to the mix... I hate decisions.

Ppfffff. I just had a very frustrating conversation. One of those people who post they took in wild life and plan on hand rearing it, complain they have had several 'taken in' babies die before and then when advice is given they shove everything back at you. "Ive done this many times and never had a problem, I already know that and your completely wrong." Sometimes I would rather take the cuss version than the polite beating around the bush, buck off version.

:U Welcome to BYC lulu2~ You had better have a lot of extras, we all be chicken crazy ya know? Haha, I'm just kidding. Have fun ok? Let us know how the hatch goes.

lulu2 Welcome! We all have chicken fever here and nobody will look at you strangely when you discuss chickens. (my friends are getting tired of it)

gckiddhouse: My oldest (now 17) went to school for one semester in her Junior year of H.S. I had a lot of the same feelings. As it turns out, she didn't like it and came back home. She's taking classes at Chandler/Gilbert now and next year will transfer to U of A as a Sophomore.
The way I see it, it doesn't hurt to try. You can always change your mind if it isn't working out.

(My daughter joked that she had the only mom who said "if you get in with the wrong crowd, you're dropping out of school!"

BTW, in case any of you were wondering... I caught that rooster with ninja skill. First try. You should have seen the look on his face. I swear he was thinking, "I can't believe that just happened". He is in the garage crowing from a box. Poor guy. At least Mahonri's got some ladies for him. He will be happy.

Ender too---at 4 he's not a chicken whisperer, by any stretch of the imagination, but I'll see him carrying around hens who dont even let ME pick them up.

ETA- when I am trying to catch a chicken, I have this picture of me in my head: not Ninja, but martial arts. More like the Count of Monte Cristo in his cell; sharpening his reflexes with the water droplets.

Here are some pics of Dozer's chick. I think I am going to name him (? Look at that cushion comb!) Beaker. Which SHOULD have been Dozer's name.

Ditto!! Lulu, if you really do wind up with BLRW pullets to sell ... please let us know, I will definitely risk the DH's wrath for a BLRW (or three, hee hee)!! They are so gorgeous

I even like the Splash ones!!

Anyway DH is convinced we have 2 roos on our hands.

One of my Cuckoo Marans is way larger and lighter than the other (looks like a Barred Rock), has huge wattles and comb and shows some aggressive tendencies. One of our Silkies also has larger wattles and that alone is enough to convince DH.

He keeps talking about building a chicken-guillotine and making chicken stew

I told him that IF they crow, and IF I can't sell/trade/give them away to one of you guys, that THEN he can have chicken stew. But if he thinks I'm not gonna replace those two chickens with another 4, then he's in for a big surprise!

I am wondering what brand of feed and or scratch you feed your chickens?

I have seen so many brands and every feed store tells you why the brand they carry is better then the rest.

My girls are free range in the backyard during the day and in the coop at night. They get fruit and veggies scraps and lots of fresh water.

I have been told to feed them half scratch and half crumble others have told me little scratch and pellets.

Any suggestions as far as Purina, Arizona Feed, Krause,Universal and?????

Hi everyone!! I'm new to chickens and was wondering if anyone can tell me what kind of pests and/or parasites are common here in AZ. I live out in the desert on the outskirts of Phoenix area, no grass or water around, just a bunch of sand, greasewood and cactus.

Coyotes, Coopers hawks, snakes, rats, racoons. Parasites: lice, red mites, worms, corzya, cocci, etc.

I feed purina or manna-pro brands. I never use Arizona Feeds brand because it is not consistent. One bag will be wonderful and the next bag will kill your flock.

I don't use scratch at all because it raises the body temp of the birds and it does not have enough nutrient in it. I choose to treat my flock with scraps from the kitchen and I supplement my feed with calf-manna that I grind into a powder and mix in my crumbles.
