Arizona Chickens

At one end of the greenhouse near the ground is a motorized intake vent and at the other end near the top is a louvered fan, both are wired to a thermostat (here are the parts). I set the temperature at, say, 85 degrees and when it exceeds that, the intake vent opens up and the exhaust fan turns on. This will exchange the entire volume of air in the greenhouse in about a minute, bringing the temperature down and turning off the intake vent and exhaust fan. You also have to have a horizontal air flow fan (HAF) to circulate the air around inside when the vents/fan are not on (important feature if you have a greenhouse sealed with poly). The HAF fan is on a timer and runs during the warmer hours of the day. The ventilation was the most expensive part of the greenhouse, but essential given I wanted to cover it with poly.

Love the greenhouse Gallo. I'm jealous.

hi all. man in just a few days there is 5 new pages of thread to read.

sry to everyone with hardware issues in their chickens, that is never good in any animal but very common for livestock and birds (even wild birds) love shiny things.

So the seed box is going with me to Phx on June 6th. Who would like to meet up and pick it up from me? There are so many fun seeds from Gallo and I have added just a few. I promise to have more next time around.

Gallo I am sooo jealous of you going to salt river. we used to go every Easter but when my grandma got put on oxygen we stopped. I miss it. Maybe I should take my boys there.

We are finishing our 3rd chicken coop and will be building a new coop soon. so many chickens so little time. lol j/k. we are  trying to separate breeds and colors of breeds.

I hope everyone is living through the heat ok. our girls (and guys) seem to be doing just fine. thankfully.

If no one else signs up for it we will take it.. Or after they're done with it we can get it.. We will host for others that may want to come & talk chicken.. Whatever works it will be fun.. Thanks

Guys I've got a friend who lives within the Phoenix city limits and she has 3 pet lullets about 6-8 ,weeks old, built a small coop/pen to confine herbirds to her property and today she had the neighbors come over and threaten to get a lawyer and the city involved if she does not get rid of them. No HOA.

Does anyone know exactly what she is and isn't allowed to do (in simple english terms)?

I think there is section of the Fourm that talks about zoning on here.. :idunno where to find it, however I did atone point.. Those neighbors must really be awful neighbors...

I wish I could have 3 coops. Actually today I took down my coop. Going with an open air set up. Wife and I just got finished sewing some outdoor fabric we had for their roof. Anybody have any suggestions for entertainment for them? I'm going to be throwing grass seed and they'll be locked up for a bit. They have some roosts, a swing and a mirror with a few other things for them to jump on.

How do I get in on the seed thing? Although I'm a newbie and don't have any to contribute yet, I'm interested.

We move things around so they can dig under the what was there.. We use wood stumps concrete blocks, stacked wood for crickets to nest in.. When we move them about, I say, bug, bug, bug & they come running.. A few will follow me around to check out what I am getting into.. We will soak a large spot in the dirt, we hang the wire baskets to the gate with treats.. When it gets above 115' we put ice cubs & blocks of ice with frozen fruit..

Spoiled little brats...

I put BOSS, Bermuda, and buckwheat in the run. The Bermuda is about a half inch tall, the sunflowers about 6", and the buckwheat about 3". All pretty much was ignored until today, when they really started chowing down on the buckwheat.
How did you keep them from destroying it as seed? I have a handful that I grown to about 6 inches now.

We did try what demo does in his run.. He uses hard cloth wire about 2 inches above the grass, moves it so they will have grass growing threw the wire, then moves it to the other side. It did not work for us, they kept kicking all the hay & tree debris all over it.. I might need to make it taller & take out the debrie in the run.. Maybe he can post up photos. Hope this makes sense.. It is a great idea,

Easy! I sprouted the seeds before I put the chickens in the run.

Oh, I also forgot we put out the wheatgrass as well. We get the old 14x14 inches of wheatgrass you would get from a juice bar.. Re-grow it for about 2-3 days. There is extra seed when we get it from them. put it out on the ground for them,, :yesss:

Even if you have nothing to contribute to the seed box, it will be fun a fun way to get seeds.. Keep us posted on if you will get it from little chicken...

How does a thermostatically controlled greenhouse work?:idunno [CONTENTEMBED=/t/31227/arizona-chickens/45750#post_13587709 layout=inline] [/CONTENTEMBED]

I can only dream about having one of these.. Someday.. love seeing your photos.. :thumbsup

@NoSkiveez, do you know why the neighbor complained or how he learned of the chickens, btw? If it's 3 pullets, 8 weeks or less, they wouldn't even be making any noise yet. Does he not like the enclosure she built? Tell her to find out what the issue really is, might be easier to solve things.

Nosey Neighbor Syndrome...Nose over the fence. Then they came over and threatened her with legal action.
