Arizona Chickens

I need some help identifying my chickens. I "bought" 2 buff Orps, and 1 Ameraucana. I'm thinking I might have 3 different kinds. The "twins" are different.1 was slightly lighter when little. now 1 has white ears and the other 1 has red ears. both have bright yellow legs. the feathers are a little different too. I stopped at the feed store in AJ where I got them and they said that the guy may have given me a sex link, to next time as for one of the girls to get the chicks. Here are some pics, hopefully you can tell. the are now 5 weeks old.
thanks again. you guys are troupers.

The twins at less than 1 week.

Red eared, White eared and the ameracana looking like a What's Up Hawk

See how the ears are different colors?

The white eared is curious, the red eared is shy

The white eared is in the corner, but you can see the difference in the feathers.

I would say you have 2 red sexlinks, definitely not Buff Orps, and one Easter-Egger, definitely not Ameraucana.

Why the different colored ears? Easter Egger is good. Sexlinks I "think" lay bigger and more eggs. But you would think that a feed store would know what they were selling.
I had read that a white ear would lay white eggs or blue and a red ear would lay brown eggs. Guess I'll let you all know when I get eggs. What a trick to play on a newbie.... LOL
Now, off to make some home made Ginger ale. Sausage to smoke tomorrow in corn husks and I'll give some of that fresh cilantro to the chicks.

No, not really. A friend of mine told me a story, when he was in Tractor Supply, he overheard the salesman telling some buyers that the chicks he was selling them would be good layers, but what he sold them were Cornish cross

If yours are sexlinks, remember that is a cross breed, so there will be variation. The hatcheries mix leghorn in the breeding to boost egg production and their ear lobes are white. The white ear-white egg, red ear-red egg is not 100%. For instance, Dorkings lay white eggs and their ear lobes are red. Ameraucanas and Araucanas lay blue eggs and have red ear lobes, not white.

Guess I just expect Honesty and for a sales person to know what they are doing. sigh. If I need to get chicks again, I'll ask here first. sigh........ Thank you so much for your info. This forum has the best people and information. I get so much mixed info. A guy at DH work said do not put a mister, it will make them sick, another said do not put a fan, it will make them sick, another said we will infest our house with scorpions and rattle snakes, another said farm fresh eggs will make you sick. I told DH to ignore them and I'll go by what the people here say.

I personally never heard of anyone getting sick from a fresh egg and I was raised on fresh eggs and milk.... it was when people started eating eggs from filthy poultry farms that they started getting sick.

Nothing that you do is gonna make them sick. Within reason that is. Musters and all that will not make them sick. I don't use them so that the girls acclimate to the heat. Fans won't make them sick. Just people being ridiculous. Everybody has something to say about everything and if they don't have knowledge on the subject, sometimes they reach in and come out with crazy stuff they've heard.

They're pretty self sufficient animals. Feed them, water them and give them shelter and you're good. I def won't be buying birds from Feed Atores like I did this time either. All but 3 of my flock are from feed stores and backyard breeders. The other 3 were gifts from a lady who's church have them to them. When I picked them up I couldn't believe how much different they were. My originals tails lifted up when they were quite old as Pullets are concerned I think. The new ones at like 2 weeks old already had all three if their tails flying very high. I can just tell these are better quality chickens.

I will be getting my next ones from quality hatcheries and respected breeders next time.

people are like that with everything, talk when they shouldn't. I like my girls and wouldn't trade them for anything. but to buy 3 chicks and have all 3 of them turn out to be something that you didn't buy....... well, that's not good odds for a store...... I had my chicks inside to long. They've only been out a week. so I took advice from here and turn the mister one at 105° and then turn it off when it gets back down to 105°. Today I didn't have to turn it on at all...... Once again, thank all of you great people for help.

If you mean their tails are up versus droopy, sick-looking, that is good, but high tails in general is not a way to tell better quality chickens since there is a specific tail angle desired for each breed as specified by the APA SOP. Rhode Island Reds, for instance, should have a tail angle of 20 degrees above horizontal for males, only 10 degrees for females, so you are looking at almost a flat topline.

White Leghorn is the most obvious. Her tail feathers stand crazy high and fairly straight. I get what you're saying about angle now. I'll have to check that out on the different breeds. The BO chick compared to my other two is the main difference. The little ones tail is erect and makes her look "proud" to me. Ha. Vs the older ones tails have barely began to rise.
