Arizona Chickens

Augghg     I'll never catch up on all these posts.

I've suggested to the admins they should create sub-forums for each state. Then we can create separate threads within our Arizona thread and not have this single 4857 page thread for Arizona covering unlimited topics. It would make it easier to search and keep track of topics. They didn't seem interested.

Maybe it is not possible? What do I know, I am from the old school & love my paper address phone book.. This is the only web Fourm I participate in.. Don't like face book, linked in.. Blablabla

What about the pitch? Can you record and post?

How do I do that?

Do you have a smart phone? If so try & catch the little s4/! In his moment.. Then post to the Fourm.
That way we could hear his pitch.. Our rooster is kind of high.. My D.H. Thinks he is.. It was only when he started that is was a low pitch.. Now he has become more protective & let's us all know when something is happening.. It seemed to get louder & higher.. Brat that he is.. He is such a sweet boy, I never want to get rid of him..

Too bad you're not in Tucson. I just gave 4- 18 egg cartons full of eggs. My EE and cuckoo maran hens lay like crazy. For the heat I have my pens tucked under a big ironwood tree plus shade cloth on the sides and have misters on them when it goes up over 95. I got some cochins bantams and they seem really tolerant of the heat.

Oh, that would be lovely! I'm very jealous and wishing we were closer.

Iggys are great dogs around the chickens. My dog's first exposure to chickens included a big rooster that attacked them regularly. They leave them alone now. Lol. But really Iggys are the Jaguar of the dog world and are only interested in fast moving prey. Chickens mostly stroll around rather than dash. The other great thing about Iggys is they are not biters. They bark up a storm but I never worry they are going to bite someone.
What color is your old guy other than grey in the face? I have a red who is the mother of my seal brown and blue.
My greyhound doesn't care about our bunnies when they hop around inside, but is obsessed with the chickens. He got to poor Polly one night when I didn't realize she wasn't locked in the coop. :Sigh: Someday I'd like a Scottish deerhound, but they are 'spensive. My other favorite breeds are Welsh Corgis, Bernese Mountain dogs, labs, and poodles (or poodle x's).

Also. Feed will help. Cool feed, not hot feed in summer in AZ. No corn and scratch. Oyster shell and fermented food worked best, with a spoon of DE every few weeks add to their fermented feed. For treats, greens and not so fresh fruit, yogurt, small amount of cottage cheese, kefir, and other then left-overs. No onions or garlic (will come out in the eggs), it also upsets their digestion.
What is fermented feed?

What is fermented feed?

Fermented feed. There is a whole thread on it that would take years to read but in short it is regular feed that is fermented. I feed my chickens fermented feed...here is how I do it...
I have a 5 gallon bucket I loosely cover. I put about 15+ cups of the blue sky feed in, cover with water and mix, stir 1-2 times a day and add water to cover feed as needed. Within 3 days (or less with the heat) it will be bubbling. That's all the good bacteria fermenting in the bucket. You can feed before the fermentation kicks in though.
I feed once a day, in the am. So I go out in the morning, scoop some FF in a strainer, set it on the bucket to drain back into the other feed. Then I clean up anything needed, change water, etc and within 5 minutes the feed is ready to be dumped into their dish. I continue to feed from my bucket until it gets low, then add a big heap and water again. Some people prefer to replenish after every feeding (too much work for me).
I noticed that my feed seems to last longer, they drink less water, and their poop smells less (which is a huge benefit for me in suburbia).
In short FF is great and easy to do!
