Arizona Chickens

@K9DaveI'm near Chandler Heights & Power, near the Basha's shopping center. I can give you a dozen or so of the EEs, Golden Marans & Orps. I put yesterday's eggs on the turner in case I heard from you. Picked up another 3 so far this morning.

Whoa. That's a lot. I would live to pick them up whenever we can get together. I have so much to learn so I want to start by asking here.

400

This is the little Feral Hen I plan to use to hatch them. She has claimed the entire nesting box so I think that I should move her to hatch the eggs correct? I have a little Segregation Coop that I an keep her in. So the nest she's sitting in has like 5 fake eggs and she lays on them constantly. Will she lay on the eggs when I move her to another spot? How many can she lay on at a time? She looks like a Game Hen to me and isn't very big. Not much sq ft under her. I have an incubator now too. Hmm

I don't think a hen sitting on eggs will lay, when they go broody they stop laying.

Thanks so much for your responses.  I had to put her to sleep today.  She probably had pneumonia but was too far gone to help (without spending a fortune and with no guarantee.) I loved that **** bird so much, I almost spent the money but the vet wasn't very hopeful.

Gallo, I didn't break her broody, she did. That's when I suspected that something was wrong.  Last time she gave it two full months. This time was about two weeks. Then she didn't return to the coop at dusk and it was all downhill from there.

Am a little surprised at how devastated I am over her loss.

Condolences from us.. :hugs

So I went to OK feeds in Central Tucson today to get scratch and came home with two chickens. What is wrong with me? LOL

One was the last from a customer- returned flock, a cute adolescent silkie ... partridge coloring I think ... So fluffy. I couldn't resist. And I've been wanting an Easter Egger, but she's a bit younger than the other chickens. I think I need to build a small holding pen for sick ones, new ones, chicks, etc.

Pictures later!

I am so glad that Tempe Feed & Tack has zero fowl!!!! :yesss:

I found one of my chickens very listless this morning, not able to hold up her head or sit straight, curled up in a corner of the coop. Her breathing seemed normal, clear nose and mouth, not egg bound. Her normally bright red comb was pale. I did not feed yesterday my DH did, so I did not get to observe anything unusual until I found her like that this morning. She did roost in her normal place last night.

I called @CityFarm and she came over, we both decided to end her suffering. Thank you @CityFarm for helping me humanely dispatch my chicken! We did a necropsy, found normal looking digestive system, liver, heart, ovary and duct. No tumors. No visible pox. She had yesterday's veggies in her crop not today's and there wasn't much. The only thing we did find was black stuff in her lungs even though she was not gasping and was breathing normally. It was worse in the left lung.

Caution, graphic necropsy pics.
Cross section showing black buildup in the lung air spaces.

Outer view of same lung.

If anyone can give any feedback on this I would greatly appreciate it! It almost looks like smoker's lung, but I'm not sure what caused it and if that was what really caused her to go downhill so fast.

Forgot to say there was some gas in the intestinal tract, but that was otherwise normal.

AMDRO question: I have been out/town for several days and our daughter spread amdro in several locations in the back yard. Thankfully, she kept the chickens penned up. DH now wants to let the girls out to run around. Amdro hotline is not open. Does anyone have experience having used this stuff. Worked great on the ant problem. Don't want it to kill our chickens. Thanks to anyone who can help.

DANG! So sorry - hate it when the ones we really are close to get sick.
