Arizona Chickens

Yup. I'll be there shortly.

Pulled my little Black Tailed Japanese Bantam hen out of the regular population and up her in a small coop by herself late last night. Put fresh bedding in and then the eggs you have me. She was laying on them this morning so looks to be successful. Should I take the wooden eggs out? There's like 5 wooden and 5 real under her now.

Thank you very much for the eggs again. Hopefully I'll have success getting some babies.

On another note I found another hen laying on about 11 hidden eggs in the coop this morning. How do you know when a hen is broody and not just laying on them temporarily?

If they are broody they usually will be protective of the stash, puff up and scream at you when you try to get near the eggs. Oh and consistently on the nest.

Thank you for all the recommendations about my new project. Decided to go with blue eggs. Searched around and got 9 Crested Cream Legbar hatching eggs from a breeder in Goodyear, AZ. Set them in the small incubator Friday for a 25th of September hatch date. Really like this new incubator. Totally automated, digital controls, turns the eggs and holds temp to 1/10 of a degree C. Only holds 9 chicken eggs though. Even has a hole on top so can add water every other day without opening. Wife got it here for my anniversary.

Whoa! Checked that one out, looks like they need an English speaking proofreader! Especially since it has a 9 egg capacity, that they describe as "hordes"! LOL.
Keep us posted on how it works for you. I am in the market for a 'bator, but haven't decided on which model yet.

The little sweeties have been dustbathing in the shavings for a couple of days, so I opened up the rest of the coop to them and put some dirt in there. They are loving it! So cute!

So what are you doing today?

I'm working on refinishing my dining room chairs. I've discovered Annie Sloan's chalk paint and have also tried making my own. For small projects, mixing regular eggshell (heh heh) paint with powdered calcium carbonate works very well. The Annie Sloan paint goes a lot farther and has better coverage, even though it's more expensive. It was also worth it to buy her paint brush. Really good quality real bristles that hold a lot of paint, don't fall off in the paint, and don't leave tracks. I'm doing three layers of paint:
  1. bright red, which didn't cover very well
  2. cream
  3. graphite

I'm doing two chairs first because I ran out of red paint:

At first I was just going to put the cream on spots I wanted it to show through, but the wood was so thirsty I feel that it need and entire coat to add the texture and patina I wanted. I'm painting the one on the right completely with cream. It still needs another coat. Then I will put the graphite (black) on. I might use the dark wax in between layers ... I'm not sure. It's a very organic process.

I'm looking for a side table to do for my brother for Xmas. I want to modge podge some lotteria cards on to the top of it, or maybe just transfer some images onto it. Does anyone have any old furniture s/he wants to get rid of.
