Arizona Chickens

They may still hatch, you still have a few days to go before hatch day. I'd leave her alone and the eggs alone.
Thank you. Did you find when we exchanged or something? I haven't even bothered those dark eggs because you said it would be tough to impossible to candle. They should be good. Still feed/water her every night?

This Wednesday should be day 21 so she may not want to leave the nest soon. You can put the feed & water near her & if she needs it it will be there just in case. The hens know what to do & I pretty much stay out of the way. I still haven't found anything strong enough to candle the Marans eggs, I have had a high hatch rate with the Marans but I use an incubator.

Tucson has had a chicken coop tour for the last six years. Usually in early December. Tickets are usually $5. The year I went I paid in advance for the ticket and they emailed me the map of coops a day or two before the event. There is no online evidence of a coop tour for 2014, but it is still early. Check the Food Conspiracy Co-op website for information. Nothing online yet. Maybe toward the end of October. Or call them and ask if there will be a 2014 coop tour.

The year I went most of the coops were in central Tucson, but there were also some in more outlying areas. It was a fun day. Well worth the $5 and gas.

Thats sounds cool! Any Tucson Peeps are welcome to come by and see mine anytime. East side, Pima/Camino Seco. Just PM me, come by and have a cold homebrew.

Wow. I hope I get a couple. She freaks out when I open the roof to her best too fast. I usually lift it a few times and she'll scoot out. Have to try a new tactic. Thank you again

If Wednesday is Day 21 you might want to leave her alone at this point. You should know by Friday if there are going to be chicks or not. She will want to sit tighter than usual while the eggs are hatching. If you spook her off the nest now you risk her accidentally damaging any chicks who might be pipping early. Just make sure she has access to food and water if she wants it.

Went out to the coop this morning to find feathers everywhere. Lots of feathers. It seems maybe the rest of the girls have decided to join the two who were molting. I wonder if thats the reason for the lack of eggs the last month. They were all going to camp freezer tomorrow and new birds next weeks. Do you think I should wait a little longer? See if they start laying again.
Depending on their age, plus adding more, you will have 2 flocks.. Some breeds like bresse & leghorn lay everyday then stop. While others lay 3-4 eggs a week, molt then lay again.. Just depends on what you want them for.. If eggs, then meat, BO are dual purpose.. after a certain age not sure if I would eat them.. To tuff.. Do ya all agree??? If so what age is to old???
Excellent ideas!
Do the words "event planner" from my resume show? Lol. I have done a ton of these kinds of things.
X2!! Wish you were our neighbor.. No one wants to help plan..
Hey @CityFarm , brewing a black Ipa today. It has roasted notes, multiple hop additions throughout the boil and some rye. I call it Darth Muerto.
Our family went on the Fat Tire bike ride yesterday.. I only rode to the our friends for breakfast.. But DH & kids were in the parade.. They had a blast, & can't wait till next year.. It has become a large event.. I was hanging out on their lawn with biscuits & gravy in one hand & a beer in the other.. Yum.. Of couse I don't drink beer for breakfast, but this was fun.. It is about that time to get started on it.. Now that it is cooler :ya

I've never seen where the BL were more than the others. Strange. I've seen Marans at Aden's be more than those breeds but typically all of those chicks were the same prices.

I think your broody should be having chicks hatch in a few days, how is she doing?

She's still laying on them. There are only 4 after she's freaked and broken 2. 3 Dark Maran eggs and 1 light colored one. Candles the light one but no action in it. It may be the last egg she laid still in there. I haven't tried candling the dark ones because she's hard to deal with and you said that I prob could t see anything.

I want some chicks. What should I do about her? Try again with new eggs or is she maybe not a good hatcher?

If the due date is 4 days after, wait 2 more.. If nothing yet, go & get day old chicks from the feed store or someone, & put under her in the evening.. She might peck don't let that scare you, just stick them under her.. Do it around 9 pm, when it is a couple of house past dark.. Can't wait to hear what happens..

so I am bummed out. I went to the Dr yesterday and I found out that I still am not released to return to work (going on a year). I have about 5 specialists I need to go and see. I have Cervical spinal stenosis, degenerative joint (2 types) shoulder and my knees and disc disease and joint disease in my neck. She did not sound positive that I will be able to return to work and said I will be having more surgeries in the near future. On the positive side all my labs were good except the fact that I am severely vit D deficient. Thank God I have an amazing DH and 2 great boys. The livestock pushes me to get up and go do even when I do not feel like getting up. Its a bit disheartening knowing that I probably will not be getting better but maybe they can keep me walking. That is my biggest prayer. I wanted to remind everyone to be careful we found this huge guy in my coop a few nights ago. thankfully he did not get anyone. Be Careful.
We will pray for God's strength to get you threw your day..
It seems like the tour is not well planned. I would have thought a bus would be taking people around. I wonder what that would cost and if you could get Purina or Nutrients to sponsor door prizes for the tour attendees and have them vote on their favorite coop and give them a prize too. I bet Lowes would donate something like a new wheelbarrow or $ off chicken wire or something.
maybe we could plan something like that here in Tucson. I know Ace hardware on 22nd would probably donate something as they are big on Tucson Clucks. Great Idea!!

$5.00 is more like it..

Had a little backyard coop improvement fun today! We fixed up the waterer, the feeder and the nest boxes are now loaded and in the coop! nest boxes! waterer (bought, not made) feeder (home depot bucket, DH made the holes and hung it) now my darling spoiled brats need to lay me some eggs, I only have one left in the fridge and the ladies are 24 weeks! Please disregard my dirty coop, we didn't make it to cleaning! I am going to put sand in in the next few weeks as well!
Looks great.. & please, those stinkers poop non STOP!!
