Arizona Chickens

So yesterday I was driving around to local feed and hay spots looking for chicks. They only had BO, RIR and other ones that I always see. I wanted some Marans or something that I don't already have. Harder task than it sounds like. I was angry at Aden Hay Sales because I stopped, saw they had Marans and came back just before closing to pick mine up. I go to pay and tell the guy I want 3 Marans and he says we don't have Marans. I say well there's a sign out on te brooder that says you do and another couple were buying them before me as Marans. His girl counterpart says " YEH I just havent switched the sign yet" I turned and walked off. Customer Service is almost gone completely. Feed stores are on their way out.

So I came home and started looking on CL for chicks. Found some out here in QC but when I inquired about the breeds I was shocked by the price.

Buff Leghorns $15
Lavender Orps $20
Blue Frizzle Orp $15

is this normal? I asked why so high (because I had sticker shock) and was told because they're rare pure bred chickens. Wanted to check and see if this is normal?

This is what is happening and it is sad. There are so-called breeders out there who are only out to make a buck. They get crazy colors that aren't in the SOP and try to charge a lot of money. They are not really interested in bettering a breed that is already in the Standard, and there are a lot of breeds that are in the APA SOP that need help, need work from dedicated breeders to make a comeback. But no, these people are not interested in that, they want the newest fanciest color and try to sell for lots of money then they are off and on to something else. Yes the Buff Leghorn is in the SOP but those 2 colors of Orpingtons are not. I think I know the person who posted those on CL because she has been posting a lot on one of the FB poultry groups, Lav. Orp. chicks for $20. Advertising a lot, pushing those chicks. I have heard about people paying a lot more for exotic colored chicks of various breeds that aren't in the SOP. But you know what they say about a fool and his money

Who would have thought fads would hit the poultry world, but they have.

I know I am sry. there are so many at our shelter and for free. they even have barnyard kittens.

oh wow!!!!! so adorable. I have never been a fan of bantams but I might rethink that for bantam NN.
Yes, those prices are normal for rare breeds. If you get into show birds or rare birds the prices really jump. remember they are NOT hatchery birds. sry you got sticker shock!!

exactly. rare and show birds cost a lot. or organic birds too.

The hens are adorable! Mine likes to be broody and she just cracks me up. I don't know how to connect video.. I will try to figure it out and attach one, she yells at me and its cute

but here is a pic of her and her mottled "sister" My kids love them because they are easy to catch! They are like:

I love them. I just found out I have 3 viable NN eggs in my incubator. yipee, yay, so excited. my first NN babies that I bred. These are actually NN EE. one lays a dark green, one a lighter green and one a tan egg. I cannot wait for little NN chicks. I may have to breed my hubbies cochins to my barred Nn rooster that I am so excited to get.

This is where I go often for feed.  Not sure if they have gotten their chicks in yet.  The people are friendly and very knowledgeable.  Every time I go in, it's like being in a country store.  A bit of a ride for you but if you're on that side of town, well worth it.  I drive there from north west Phoenix.

1:16 from my house. Whoa. I do go over that way every couple of weeks. Thanks for the recommendation.

Really it depends on the quality of the birds. If these are show quality birds of rare breeds, then yeah those are fairly normal prices. Have you seen the price of rare breed hatching eggs? I paid 48.00 a dozen for Crested Cream Legbar eggs and spent 45.00 in gas to get them. The cheapest I have seen CCL sell for as chicks is 32.00/pair. Sold in pairs only.

Whoa.

what's NN stand for?

Yes, a Boeing 747. Dry weight (no fuel) is about 45 tons. It's not the weight, though, it's the lack of traction. Think about trying to walk in about a foot of snot.

My husband worked for TWA for 26 years.  Got to go to Hawaii several times as well as Ireland, Holland and my home country of Sweden, all for free.

I'm a quarter Swedish too! :weee I also loved in Oahu for 3.5 years in the early 90's! :D
Update on my predator attack: still nothing in the traps after 3 nights. Maybe tonight :fl   I just won't rest easy until I catch it, but if it is a fox, may not go for the trap. Oh, and one of my Blue Ameraucana pullets must have hurt herself that night of the attack, because now she can't walk, her leg is sprawled out. She was in a pen adjacent to the birds that were killed and was having problems that next morning. She is in isolation now but not sure if she will recover. Mentally, I still haven't recovered :hit

I'm working on the turkey pens that are most vulnerable right now. Got a trench dug and cement poured at one gate entrance. Will do another gate the same way tomorrow, dig out those grape vines and put wire skirts down.
......How is your Americauna doing?

:old .....this is why I bought 4 ( 2 Black copper Marans & 2 BR) from desertmarcy yesterday when I was an hour from Tucson. :love

I don't want to be taken again by somebody just trying to getting a few bucks for selling me any old kind of bird.

@k9dave

I may have just the kitten and for you!! :D

now she is been inside with me for about 5 weeks and a week and a half ago I just started toilet training her on the human Toliet, without a litter box. She likes to bite my toes to get me to play string or fight with her, she likes to catch flies, chase string, her mother's a feral cat, and I don't think I have anything stimulating to offer her as shes very very active! Let me know if you'd like to consider her!
she's pretty and she's been eating fairly healthy food. ;)

I am in so much trouble. The DW is gets back from the Galapogos Islands on Wednesday. The house is filthy because I've been a bachelor for 10 days and since she's gone I've gotten like a total of 8 bunnies. I have to clean the house and finish this enclosure by then. I have been doing all kinds of stuff and I think yall will like it. I e said before it's hard to take pics out there or maybe I'm horrible at taking them but I'm gonna try to do a step by step of all the stuff I do through pics. It's turning out to be a pretty big job. A lot of it is changing plans all the time and having to undo the work. Lol

I will post pics tomorrow of where I am now and all the way to hopefully a really cool chicken/rabbit coop/run which obviously is gonna need a name. Any ideas?

The Rabbi-ken Roost
Hens and Hoppers
Thighs and Thumpers lol

Wow it's late. 4:05 am. I may be working on it at sunrise. I do love Az when it's not Summer.
