Arizona Chickens

I give up!! Roxy, my 7-month-old RSL, has been laying fairy eggs for a month. Then, last week, she presented us with these two beauties, weighing in at 68 & 72 grams. Then she took a day off and went back to laying fairy eggs! I guess her system is just developmentally delayed. She does seem to be making progress, laying with more regularity, and at least now we know that she is capable of putting a yolk in the egg!

I have a young pair of bonded ducks. She is a Pekin and he is a White crested. The only reason I am looking to re-home them is I have chosen to breed ducks on the watch/endangered lists. Her name is Ducky Moe moe and he is Fluffy. We purchased them in April. She should start laying soon. $35- pair. (must go together, they are bonded) .Let me know if any of you want a pretty white pair of duckies. :)
Pretty birds. I'll show her these pics and see what she wants to do. They'll be the owners ducks so it's up to her. Thank you for posting.

It probably was a red-tailed hawk. They are the biggest around here, I'm pretty sure. They are beautiful, and I would hate to kill one. Wildlife is too important to keep around! We have a Cooper's Hawk that tries to catch wild quail in our yard. He doesn't seem interested in the big chickens. I just put the littles out in a new coop (super deal on craigslist!!!), but they are covered, and I bring them in the shed at night in their box. While I was collecting them at dusk the other day there was a massive great horned owl sitting in the Palo Verde tree above the coop. Same night a pack of coyotes started whooping (don't know what else to call it) either in our yard or the neighbors. I ran out in my tank and undies and bare feet to run them off. Glad it was 3:30 AM so the neighbors couldn't see me! I didn't see how many there were as they ran off before my eyes had a chance to adjust to darkness. From last week, here is a paw print of the predator that took away one chicken (Crannie, my fave.) and Pepito, the duck: Another view: What do you think of the chair I'm refinishing (4 to go!): I wanted to make the spots I distressed more worn and polished looking, but even with using fine grit sandpaper, they are still scratchy looking. The upholstery is waxed cloth. I think that's what you call it. It might be too sticky/hot in the AZ environment, but I can always change it. Any suggestions for tools to make the distressing look more natural?
I like the chairs. Love the oil cloth. You might try a small hand held sander with very fine grit sandpaper.

Or try a scotchbrite pad. Wait til the outer finish hardens, then just hit the high spots by hand to make it look more like natural wear. Stop when the first layer just starts showing through. Milk paints really respond well to this treatment.
After you have the look you want, finish with a coat of carnauba wax for that polished look.

Thank you I think they are beautiful too but have decided to focus on breeds that need help. H is a very good drake with his hens but does not like other drakes near his girls. he keeps watch over them really well. :)

I may be adding breeds needing help myself but chickens rather than ducks. Thinking of getting some Rhode Island Whites with the rose comb, Crevecouers & Campines. Was looking for Lamonas, White Hollands & Black Spanish but I don't think they exist anymore.

Not sure about the others, but Murray McMurray is listing White Faced Black Spanish for January and February delivery dates. They also list crevecouers and golden campines.

Hope it didn't do too much damage. I've been having a very large hawk hanging around the past couple days. Yesterday while I was cleaning coops it landed on the fence about 20 feet from me. All the chickens already took cover under bushes or into coops but I couldn't believe how bold this hawk is! Impressive wing span too. Must be very hungry to be hunting my Orpingtons.

Thanks, I didn't know they had those breeds. I'm planning on ordering from Sand Hill Preservation, I've ordered from them in the past & have been happy with their service & mission statement. They sell hard to find plants too.

Yeah, @desertmarcy posted a link to Sand Hill back about a month ago, and I was checking it out. They do have a good variety of chickens and plants. I have never ordered from them (yet). Also never ordered from M McM, but saved their site on my favorites list. A friend of mine orders a batch from them every year, and seems to be happy with them. The only people I've ever ordered from is Cackle Hatchery for Jersey Giants, and My Pet Chicken for partridge Cochins. Pretty happy with Cackle, but MPC charges way too much shipping.
