Arizona Chickens

Have you been able to find red heat bulbs less than 250 watts? Because the 250 watt bulbs are wicked hot and will burn you if you accidentally touch one. I have used 150 white heat bulbs, not particularly crazy about the fact they are white, but couldn't find red in a lower wattage. I have not had any problem with the white light when brooding chicks or turkey poults although I've read it can cause picking problems.
I haven't found any locally or even in the valley last winter; ran a search at Amazon right now; there are some 75 watt ones out there; I might order some because those 250s eat up the electric and are waaaay oversized for what I need http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias=aps&field-keywords=heat+lamps

Thanks, I didn't know they existed. Many of the reviews (of 2 different brands of the 75 watt) stated they did not last very long though. That doesn't give me a lot of confidence for the price. But I agree with you, I only use the 250 for an outside brooder, never inside.

I use red outdoor flood lights for my brooders. I think they are 50 watt.

The reptile section at Petsmart had a number of red heat lamps in a variety of sizes down to 50 or 60 watts. I also found several on Amazon last year. Haven't looked recently. The ones I bought last year worked well and I haven't had to replace them. I use a Sweeter Heater as the primary heat source. The Sweeter Heater is on all the time. The heat lamp is on a thermostat and I change the thermostat settings and lower the wattage of the bulbs as the chicks grow out. My brooder is outside, so I need the backup heat source.

During the day I open one side of the brooder so the chicks get some natural light. When that door is open they can watch the older birds through the hardware cloth, which makes it easier to integrate the flock later. I use a small white LED light on a timer for "daylight" because some days are too wet or cold to open the door to the brooder.

I use 250W red heat light from wallmark.

I got 10 lbs food from feed bar, that what they are feeding them

the pine bedding keep get into their water any way to void that issue

Give me any idea any thing else do I need or get some better food for them?

Thanks

In a brooder, I never found a way to keep the bedding out of the water completely, but sitting the water on something where they could still reach it, but was not sunk into the bedding helped. I used two bricks laying side by side. They will scratch around and throw bedding everywhere before you are done with the brooder. They will also eventually fly up and sit on top of it and poop in the water. Its just something they do. Haha.

The only thing I can think of to just remind you is to check their vents for pasty butt daily. There are a ton of videos explaining what that is and how to remove it safely on the internet.

I usually invert a pie pan to raise it a little bit - but unfortunately they are good at getting "stuff" in their water and feed. Not to worry - it won't hurt them - just remove whatever gets in the water, etc. I personally like the Nutrena grower/starter - but it is your decision - whether you will be organic, etc. etc. In CG I have to get my Nutrena starter/grower at the CAL Ranch store for cheapest price. Plus you can get it in 25 or 40 lb bags. Personally if got the chicks at the feed store I would watch for just a couple days for the pasty butt problem but they are probably past it by now. Have fun!!
