Arizona Chickens

I recd a Target gift card today and couldn't figure out what I wanted to get with it. After all the talk of home made mayo on here, I'm gonna get an immersion blender!!! Can't wait to try it out. P.S. those farm pix are making me so envious. Have started with a few chickens and now adding rabbits. Should have our first litter in a few days. Can't wait to get out of the city and onto some property where I can add a couple of goats, etc. My east coast family thinks I've gone mad.

I am a chef by trade and LOVE my immersion blender. Of course I have the super expensive one to make soup, etc. All this talk of homemade mayo has me yearning for some and I never knew I could do it so easily!

I feel like I've been away for MONTHS! Life has been busy and throwing me some major curve balls. I had to rehome one hen for her screeching, and still have 3 RIR's left. Ever since it got even remotely cold I am only getting 1-2 eggs a day. I know my one gal, Lemon, our special chicken doesn't lay. None of them actually molted this winter but I do have some sparse neck feathers. Lemon sits in the nest box daily but nothing ever comes out. She is just the sweetest little thing, lowest on pecking order and never seems to be part of the other two unless they are bossing her around, or she is following them around wondering what they are after.

I had hoped to have 4 chickens and have a good supply of eggs when I started this venture. Now that I only have 3 and only 2 laying it has become a bit of a disappointment. Not to mention that we let them free range in the backyard and they have destroyed my lawn and of course poop all over my pool deck. I know I could lock them back in the run but they are so happy and we have realized that we don't have a predator problem. I enjoy them as pets and love their personalities, but pretty sure once the laying days are over for all of them I will not continue with chickens. The time spent on clean-up and maintenance of the yard/coop/run is not enough return for the awesome fresh eggs.

It feels good to be back!

The tree that was cut was under a tree and I had the water on a slow trickle, boy do I hope this one makes it.. the tree you gave me is inside. I got it just in the nick of time.. Has not lost any leaves this winter, but it also has not grown..
Oh and the fig tree cuttings has some roots,

.
I can't wait to share some of them with neighbors.. A few neighbors have nothing in their yard.. I will look for other varieties in the spring to propagate..
How's your oregano?
I'm glad the fig cutting is growing! The oregano is still alive. Not growing yet but probably putting out roots.

After you get goats, you'll have to start making your own cheese too!

Yeah, my chickens loved my garden and patio, but they destroyed the garden, lawn, and made the patio gross. Fencing them off meant adding another gate/fence in the yard (I already have my yard portioned up), but it was the best chicken decision yet. They are happy and I'm happy and it's...relaxing to have my yard back. This time of year I feel like it hardly matters...they are confined to their run Monday-Thursday. Haha, they look forward to their weekend starting too!

That is what I did! Fenced off my patio area, more to keep dh happy as he didn't like the chickens pooping around his bbq area. It works well and they don't seem to miss the patio area since they have 1/2 an acre to themselves with sage bushes and trees. I have my place cross fenced so multiple gates I go thru all day. Each group has at least 1/2 an acre and I'm planting more shrubs and trees. Got some great deals at the nursery on their clearance area.
