Arizona Chickens

Oh, and I forgot to share my fly solution!

We had HORRIBLE flies. Like a plague. We had them last year too (without chickens) but this year they were 10X worse. They were so thick on the grass in our backyard that all of the shady spots looked black. Seriously disgusting. And I live in a nice non-agricultural HOA neighborhood. Our entire backyard is grass except for our garden, and the chicken run is our side-yard. There are no piles of poop anywhere and everything is clean. But STILL the flies!

So I bought 3 Rescue hanging fly traps at Home Depot ($15 for 3) and a 50lb bag of food-grade DE at Higley Feed ($24). I hung up the 3 "meat bags" as we like to call them... one in the chicken run, one near our patio where the flies were the worst, and one near the back fence in the grass. Then I sprinkled DE liberally throughout the coop, run, and all of the shady parts of our grass where the flies were the thickest. I used maybe 1/10th of the bag, and I'll reapply as needed.

5 days later the improvement is so huge that I can barely believe it. All of our "meat bags" have 2-3 INCHES of dead flies floating in them.

All of the DE-sprinkled areas, even the ones nowhere near a "meat-bag" have a tiny fraction of the original amount of flies in them... maybe 10%. At most.

All in all-- a HUGE success! All for the low low price of $39 (and the necessity of smelling the meat-bag odor when the wind shifts...those things are coming down asap, but they work great!)

I love the rustic playhouse coop!

The Meat Bags sound disgusting but I'm glad it works! I can't believe you found DE so cheap. Is it really food grade? I found it in Tucson for $35.00 for 50lbs and they had to specially order me the bag. No one else had heard of it.

newchickmom09 - I have absolutely no answers for any of your questions.

I'm sorry! It sounds like both Cuckoo Marans and Barred Rock have dots on the heads, and there is a disagreement about telling them apart by leg color in another thread... but it sounds like it is generally yellow feet for Barred Rock and pink or blackish pink for Marans. I read that adult Barred Rock have more distinctive barring. As for sexing the maran chicks - it says the females are darker than the males.

The Cuckoo Maran chick I got from her died (my fault, got stuck and couldn't get back to the momma hens) and I haven't been out to her place since then... when my hens were broody this time she didn't have any Maran chicks. But, I'll get some next time!

Actually... I wonder if I got one or two if I could sneak them in under the silkies tonight. Would the week-old chicks know the difference?

Let me know what types you get!

Ohh man that is awesome. There is so much cool stuff in PHX! Ikea, cool chickens, cheap DE! I have a friend who might be coming down from Iowa for a business meeting there. If so I'll totally road trip it up there and pick some up.

The really funny part is that a few years ago I drove from Tucson to Flagstaff EVERYWEEK to spend weekends with my husband (he was at NAU and I was going to school here) and I never stopped in Phoenix! I did that for 2 or 3 years! And now I have a kid and think just driving up to PHX is a big deal.

I will be VERY VERY careful. I'm careful when I get anywhere NEAR them. I like that on the front it says "disposable." Now don't get me wrong-- I don't get grossed out easily. I have 3 kids and have washed all kinds of things out of clothing. I even use cloth diapers, but you couldn't PAY me to wash that thing out to reuse it! :gag:

The feed store I get the DE from sells 50lb bags for around $24. It is amazing how that stuff works.

Our apricot tree has gotten huge this year and has a million apricots on it. Mmmm! Everyday I am out there picking fruit and there is still so many that they have over ripen and started to fall off of the tree. The flies are just LOVING that. I might have to get one fo those fly traps from Homedepot here soon.

Trust me I will defiantly let everyone know what I get and post pics.

Mahonri. . . .I am delighted to hear that your situation has "mitigated" somewhat. . . .continuing to send good thoughts your way for you and yours (chooks, (and even neighbors)) included, of course

Here are my little ducklings that I hatched in my homemade incubator they were all shrinked wrapped and all three had to be helped out.
Order is Roxanne (8 days), Hershey (6 days), and Wiggles (3 days) old. They are from 1 week to 2 weeks younger then the rest of the clutch that hatched on 5/31 and 6/1.

I eat an egg sandwhich every morning.

They are just pets.

I eat the eggs and sell them when I get to many saved up. I would eat the extra drakes if I had someone who could process them for be. For now I am just given then extras to a friend. I just can't butcher them since I put so much time in taming them and loving them, but if someone did it for me then I would eat them. My hubby is the same way...it is kind of a mind trick since we are both hunters and clean our own game all of the time so it isn't like we don't know how. We even hunt duck during duck season.

Have you ever tried duck eggs before?

No, I don't think I have ever had duck eggs. I have heard good things about them. How many eggs a week do ducks lay?

hoping that is not a stupid question.... Do they start laying at 6 mo old like chickens do? How often do you clean the water you provide for their swimming pleasure?
