Arizona Chickens

Brat's getting ready to see who is bigger. The one on the right, I think is a boy. Splash Wheaten Ameraucana. Anybody think so too?

Latest update on my newest hatch. Out of 9 marans 7 hatched and out of 6 dark Cornish 5 hatched so good results really. On my new website feathermeadows in a week I will have Silver Lace Cochins and full size dark Cornish chicks. I may have a proven breeding pair of Dark Cornish listed on my site in a day or two. Prolific layer and great hatch rates

Only one of my Bielefelders hatched this time. The poor guy was so lonely I just had to get him some friends. I couldn't find any really young chicks close to his size, but so far he seems to be getting along well with the larger three week-old White Rocks I purchased from the feed store. They don't peck at him and they have no problem letting him snuggle in with them.

OVER-RUN WITH CHICKENS!

It all started a few weeks ago at Tractor Supply. They had some golden sex link chicks that were at least a week and a half old, and already fairly big. I had my girlfriend with me, and ended up taking home 6 of them. They refused to stay in the brooder, so I had to modify one of my chicken pens and put them outside. Then, @desertmarcy tempted me with some blue and black Ameraucana chicks. I had to have some of those, and then had to go pick up my adult Ameraucanas from my old house, and modify another pen into a nursery pen.

Yesterday, I needed to stop at a local feed store to pick up some fly traps. When my girlfriend saw the sign on the door announcing that they had chicks, she wanted to come in and see them. Took home 5 Ameraucanas (easter eggers). Took my brother over there today, and ended up taking home 5 barred Rocks. My brother now has the chicken flu, and I need to go back to Tractor Supply tomorrow and help him pick out about a dozen golden sex links.

It might be my imagination, or maybe the warmer weather. I seem to be buying a lot more feed lately.

I'm having trouble finishing the Chicken Palace for all the chickens I have now, and with all the chicks I've been getting lately, the additions to the Palace look like a dim light at the end of a very long tunnel.

IS THERE A 12 STEP PLAN?

I've got some really cute black sex-linked pullets here for sale right now

$5 each, guaranteed pullets.

I just had to turn away the truck that has my latest feed order. I asked them to send a driver who is able and willing to negotiate my driveway. Otherwise, I have to pick up 5000 lbs of feed bags (100 bags X 50 lbs) twice---once to put it in my little pickup, drive it to the back, and again from the truck into my storage building. They do not guarantee they will come up a driveway but most drivers will do it. I requested they send a driver that will, but they sent the same guy who came out here last time, and he is not comfortable with it, not as skilled by his own admission. Even HE told me, he argued with them about him doing the delivery because he knew it was going to be a problem. But they sent him anyway.

Now here I am looking at used forklifts on CL. Sheesh....I need one of those 12 step plans, too. I'm getting too old for this. On top of that, delivery costs went up 35% over last fall. Add another $3.18 on to each bag of feed instead of the $2.36 it was last Oct.

I heard something priceless on youtube from a guy who said he had a very understanding wife. His back yard was chock full of (rabbit) cages and he wanted more rabbits. Rabbit math apparently is just as challenging as chicken math. He said his wife told him he can have all the rabbits he wants, he just can't build any more cages

. I loved that. That's as close to any kind of effective intervention I've heard of.

I'm right there with you. I was supposed to start with four chicks last November. Right now I have 33 chicks/chickens of various ages and more hatching eggs on the way...and we're going to Tractor Supply tomorrow where they might have Buff Orpingtons that I just may have to buy to keep my single hatchling company since the White Rocks I picked up today are so much bigger than he is..... I may need an additional ten steps in that plan.
