Arizona Chickens

5 out of 5 of my Porter Bronze turkey hatching eggs hatched! I'm still waiting on the Black turkeys. Those eggs took a rough ride for some reason. 5 of the 10 were completely scrambled from shipping. The remaining 5 started developing kind of slowly, so I think they are behind the others and there is still hope they will hatch. They aren't officially due until tomorrow. These are my first Bronze turkeys. They are heritage Bronze, not broad-breasted, from Frank Reese (Good Shepard) line but Kevin Porter sent them to me. Frank Reese no longer sells to the public so I feel fortunate to get these.
Congratulations! I am so interested in raising a few turkeys but need them to be very quiet. Have been starting my research. I am in an HOA. We are permitted some fowl as long as they are not a nuisance to the neighbors. I also considered housing them at my FIL home but would really have to make their home predator proof. He is in the desert with lots of animals that would love a turkey snack. I guess I'll know when the time is right. They are next on my list to add to the back yard homestead

I brood on my shaded patio, in a large dog kennel. For the first 3 weeks, I turn on the heat lamp once it's full dark.

For just hatched chicks in the brooder in this weather, do you provide an option for a light or an EcoGlow during the day? It is hotter outside than is supposed be in the brooder, right? What time do you turn the light on? Or at what temp?

I actually brood mine in my house for the first week so I can keep a close eye on them, and since I'm now running the A/C pretty religiously I use a heat light to ensure they don't get too cold. Then I move them out to the house and into my garage, exposing them to fresh air and light during the day and locking them up safe and sound at night. I may still use the light at night if it looks like it will be cool, but my last flock only required the light for about two nights. Once I'm certain they won't fit through the bars of my mini-run I start putting them out on the ground each day for increasing lengths of time and by then there's absolutely no need for the light.

My significant other is allergic to birds, so I can't brood them in the house, unfortunately. Plus, the noise scared away my last housemate.

Hi I'm looking for a no kill home for my pair of black Wyandotte's ( hen and rooster) I raised them from chicks and they are beautiful , tame and very good natured. Unfortunately my HOA is making me get rid of them. They need to be rehiomed together because they are inseparable! Please let me know if your interested or you know someone who is!

Thanks, Liz

I know someone on Tucson CLUCKS on Facebook who is into Wyandottes and may be interested. Do you have contact info? She bought a Columbian W. and a bantam blue from me.

I too feel your pain on your loss! My Rooster Fearless, one of my first 4 chickens got nailed by a scorpion before he killed it and fed it to his girls. Sadly, he passed on after about a half hour, in my arms. That was Sunday, today my gold laced wyandotte Copper was dead when I came home from work.... No idea if it was a scorpion too, but we really don't have that many in our yard. Pest control hubby does a sweep at least twice a week with the black light.

Had someone told me a month ago I would be having a rooster shortage, I would have laughed in their faces... UGH. SO, I am ISO an adult rooster (breeding age, not too old) for my girls. I am in east mesa. Let me know if anyone has any roosters....

edited to add: I have read/heard that benadryl might help if caught fast enough.

H! I have a pure BBS Ameraucana cockerel, about 5 months old, that you can have. I also will have a couple SQ/BQ bantam black Wyandottes. (I'm pretty sure I know which ones are cockerels, but not 100%.) I am in Oro Valley, northwest of  Tucson.

Got the set up, now need to figure out when we can come your way.. I'm dreaming of Salmon Faverolles, Houdini have you found your rooster? I did leave your vine out in the front yard, but the walk way..
