Bird's can go down quickly.. Is your Roomate familiar with bird behavior?

He is somewhat familiar, definitely not an expert.
Thanks all for the input!!

Your welcome.. Not that your Roomate would do this, but see if they will give them treat's & see if they all are eating.. Plus they could go out at night and do a check on them one, by, one.. Check for lice, if their crops are full.. Have some pot's of water out for them to stand in. I know you mentioned misters, but some bird's don't like them.. :hugs:hugs But again that's only if they will do that.. Not a fun thing to be thinking about while out of town..

Thank you! Fridge it is. Hopefully no more will go down. The two that died are hatchery birds, makes sense as they come from cooler climates. I have a Cochin rooster who is about 5months and doing great in the heat and personality wise. Hopefully when I start hatching in the fall I will get more aclemated birds. What do you do? Choose the best in the heat and breed them?

@Cityfarm

Unfortunately, he is not that experienced. He is changing out the water a few times per day that they stand in to cool. They seem to like the misters, stand near them and get their backs wet. I'm just heartbroken that I'm not there to help them. I did have him FaceTime me so I could see their behavior- some panting but no more than normal. They looked just like they do when I'm there.

I don't breed the weaker birds. If a bird is struggling I tend to cull it.

When I was getting started with this breed I did have one bird drop dead off the roost. She had been a vigorous bird and was a great broody mother. I didn't have time to necropsy her so I never did figure out what she died from. She showed no signs of illness or stress. It was late in the fall so I'm pretty sure it wasn't heat. Could have been a heart attack or some internal issue. Sometimes you just don't know what hits them. I planted her body in the garden, so she didn't go to waste.

One year I had a respiratory thing go through the whole flock. By the time I noticed it all the birds had it. It was relatively mild sneezing for most of the birds. A couple of them were breathing noisily. I culled the ones that seemed to be struggling. Haven't had a similar problem since. The birds I kept must be fairly resistant to whatever it was.

Management strategies may change depending on your particular breeding goals. Breeding for vigor as a priority will help a lot. Healthy, strong birds are much easier to take care of than weak birds.

Been off line for some time ! Occasionally stop by but can never keep up with all posts. Also took a vacation.

Despite having six hens who like to sit on eggs only the following two chicks have survived the neighborhood cat attacks through the chain link fence.

Only rooster is FM/NN,

This chick has a knack for misadventures. She needed to be saved from being smothered under a upturned water container and two days ago I found her hanging by one leg in the seam between two chainlink panels . Guess her name should be TROUBLE
