Arizona Chickens

Hi, is there anything that I can do to keep my chickens water cool? And, I have this huge Colorado river toad that I find in the water tubs daily, and I know that they are poisoness. Will they harm my hens?

Freeze some water bottles and put them in the water. That will help some. Hang in there, we are due for some relief.
The up side is that when winter comes and most are trying to keep their birds warm, ours will be singing in the sunshine.
If the toad is too big too eat, with any luck they will leave him alon e. You might try putting the pans up on bricks so the toad isn't able to get in them. A couple inches may be enough.

We get those toads too. A couple of times I've gone out at night and thought a chicken left me a present on the patio. Only to find out that present moves

. I put small ice bottles in the chickens waterer and make sure it's in the shade all day. Ours have multiple damp or wet spots in the yard they can go to for relief. So far so good. Now that pre season football has started, I am pretending it's fall. A girl can dream can't she… Hopefully we are in the final push of summer temps.

Thank you very much! I will try that. If the toads are in the water, should I change out the water?

Don't worry about the toads. I have a small pond with a resident goldfish. Several toads hang out in it. The chickens drink from it all the time. Never had a problem with fish or chickens. The tadpoles are another story. The fish thinks they are yummy.

10:30 P.M. Still 90 degrees here. Haven't lost any chickens, but egg production is dropping off.
4am and already 82 it is going to be hot today. We put fans in a couple of the back paddocks and everyone has wading pools in the form of dish pans. I see several of the girls standing in the water to cool their feet. We also spray down the ground to give them cool spots to lay in the shade.
