Arizona Chickens

Oh yes I so miss them as well!! I miss hearing about ranger?? Have you seen or heard anything..

Nothing at all about Ranger - boo!!  BUT we were driving some of the back roads the other day and noticed a tall large cage being built!!  Unfortunately this isn't one of those know-no-stranger farmers but we'll travel that way more often just to look.  If he is there then he will be well taken care of - their stock is good looking.

I do hope he found his ladies.. :frow

Gender guess anyone? My slightly bigger/same age hen follows this one around a lot, and that's a pretty good size comb for a 5-6 week old chick.

BLUE ISBAR FOR SALE: Most likely it is a rooster. (posted picture on Blue Isbar forum and was told someone had a chick the same age with a much smaller comb and you can see tiny sickle shaped feathers near the tail, so I am 75% positive this is a roo). I am asking $10, since he is a rare breed and that's what I paid for him.

LOCATION: Globe, AZ

NEED TO REHOME HIM BEFORE HE CROWS AND GETS ME INTO TROUBLE! (Besides, if it turns out to be a hen, you'll get a bonus

There must be someone close to you that would give you some egg's??? I did hear the store egg's are on sale now.. Yuck..

I have enough eggs for myself and my family. It's my extended family and friends who will suffer for the slowdown...though I have to say that my girls redeemed themselves for the day yesterday by giving me 11 large eggs. I have two broody hens right now, one of which is with her chicks, one stressed out Silkie who stopped laying, and a total of 12 active layers plus two that are just coming back into lay after being broody. The rest of my girls, including three Bielefelders that STILL aren't laying (after 32 weeks), five Dorking mixes that are 24-weeks old and haven't reached POL, and an 18-week old flock of Easter Eggers haven't reached POL yet. I have a sneaking suspicion that just to mock me they'll all start laying at the same time and I'll suddenly have four dozen eggs in one day or something.

My EE girls are older now too - so what was every other day is now more like every third or fourth day. I will need to get a few more as I love those colored eggs!!
Most of my EEs or the leghorn mixes didn't molt hard this year but the Austrolorps - whoa! I finally just got out a broom and dust pan to sweep up the feathers - worked out pretty darn good too. One of the places they like to sit I thought I had lost one of those black lovelies but it was just a pile of feathers from molt!! We love to watch how the new feathers come in!

My Australorps look terrible! One of my girls started her molt very early and was bald from the top of her head, across her entire back and along the top of her wings for over two months. Now...she's nearly fully feathered with glossy, black feathers gleaming with green highlights....and my other four Australorps have adopted her previously bald look. I cringe every time one of my cockerels decides to mate with one of those girls. I've noticed they either offer complete resistance or submit instantly to get it over with. Poor things!

And my Naked Neck Turken girls are more naked than usual too.

I have lots of family that are waiting for my girls to start laying better again. We eat a lot of eggs so that might be a while. I still have molting hens too. My easter eggers are molting. It's odd I thought they would wait until next year to molt, because they are only a year old, but they are dropping feathers everywhere.

The EE's I had did not lay as much as I had hoped.. Our duck's lay way more than the chicken's... I ONLY THINK of colecting those feather and making a pillow.. :lau
you're too funny, DON'T give me any more ideas than the projects I currently have, lol

yes, absolutely!!.... I think they are mocking you..... what else can they do for fun?? :lau

Your flock sounds spoiled.. What is your elevation . I know I could look it up but I'm just to lazy this evening.. What breeds do you have??
Thank you! We're at about 1800 feet! I'm pretty sure all of mine are mixed breeds. I got them from my brother in law (for free) which lives in Mesa. I'm happy to say they look so much better than when I got them. Sunny Side Up is the only one that still needs to grow her feathers back. He had too many roos with the poor hens. The other day I bought 6 chicks and they are mixed breeds too. One of these days I'll get some that I can identify the breeds, lol.

Looks like fun, it looks like you have leghorns and maybe bard rocks or something else?
I think they had fun. Since this is my first time with chicks I wasn't sure if I should take them out or not. It was in the low 80's and I only had them out there maybe 45 minutes to an hour. They were watched the entire time. They were scratching and pecking at the dirt and grass. Then they went straight back into their brooder. Thanks for the heads up on the possible breeds. I asked the lady at the feed store where I bought them and all she said "They are a mix batch we only know they are pullets." It's gonna take me a little time to get used to all the breeds, lol.
