Arizona Chickens

I already have a mille fleur d'uccle/cochin mix roo. I got the 2month old bunch in hopes of lots of girls to chill his assitude out!!! He goes to charge me at times...hits my legs & has broken skin/bruised so it's an ouch. He's awesome with the 3 older girls so that's been why he's here...that & he's gorgeous. I'm thinking I'll keep Penguion (black cochin) for certain & Freddie (oegb). Right now I think I've 5 boys...all 3 oegb & both cochin. Too many boys. Thankfully no issues as of now with fights, etc. I'll be posting the baby babies & boys for sale this week I think. Can't keep all the baby babies either.

That's a great Daddy! Handsome boy too. These are all hatchery chicks so not sure if any will be show quality or not. I know it's not likely, but there are the rare exceptions that do occur so I never rule it out. I haven't decided about showing. I'm thinking of breeding crevecoeur to help keep them going...especially if I end up with a boy & girl from these two I have.
I show for my ffa group, and I have to say, a local feed store has provided some great barred rock and GL Wyandotte blood. My silkie is beautiful when she is clean, and Dory, if she/he lives, though they have a crooked beak, would be perfect for some other standard.

Im pleasantly surprised by our local feed stores ^^

Cool! Yeah, the babies are from Ideal. That's where the feed store said they get theirs. I've been thinking once I settle on a breed I'll look into show, etc. Genetically there can always be a surprise. Plus, in the case of the crevecoeurs the original French had the ears has blue & for some reason our SOP has it as red. To me, that's wrong. I get developing colors/lf/bantam/etc, but at least keep the original as the original.

I would have shown my birds last year (It was my first year)

but the UofA superintendent "disqualified" me because she read the rules wrong, or was not informed correctly of the rules. She thought I had to do showmanship to do breed standard, so i was signed up for it, and when i didn't show up because i had ACT testing, and I didn't know I had to go, I showed up the next day for breed standard and was informed that i "wasn't supposed to be there" because I didn't show for breed standard,. If I had known she read the rules wrong, I could still have shown that day. But noooo, she said if im not going to care for my birds there, I should take them home., even my egg layer who had nothig to do with the issue.

I re-read the rules over on the way home, when i had gotten my mental bearings, to discover the rules did NOT in fact state that I had to do showmanship to do breed standard, and that I had basically been eliminated from the show due ignorance of a coordinator!

pi**ed me off to say the least

my father was FUMING

But from what i heard, my barred rock Finn could have gotten a blue ribbon, or even a best in show!

Any idea what this red is? I just cleaned the babies little butt off & in the process had the remaining umbilical cord come out. I'm holding wrapped up so I can be sure the baby is pretty dry before going back & there's the red. Something to worry about? Acting fine..chirping like crazy. Maybe just irritated or whatnot from the poop & clean up?

Also, am I nuts or does poop catch on the umbilical cord stump????? They can poop & are pooping...just noticing where it is there's some poop on most of them. This one pooped freely when I picked up to check & clean.

Thats a little freaky, I've never heard of that!

I would look it up, or even ask around. That doesn't sound normal though if they are acting fine I wouldn't flip.... like I usualy doXD

The red is a kind of swelling red, or a bloody red? swelling-ish red sounds like something to do with a small infection.

One of my favorite Naked Neck rooster was stung in the face by a scorpion. Luckily I just happened to witness the entire thing and got to him in time. The sting of our Bark Scorpions is just as deadly to a chicken as it is to a human, a dog, etc. Heisenberg (my NN rooster that was stung) jumped straight up in the air, ran a few steps and then sat down and began trembling. His entire body was tight as if all of his muscles had contracted simultaneously. I immediately brought him into the house and treated him with a Benadryl tablet that I'd pounded into a powder and mixed with water. It took him about two hours to recover sufficiently to return to his flock and he wasn't entirely stable on his feet until the following day.

One of my other NN hens gobbled up that scorpion in record time without being stung and was completely unaffected by it. They can eat them just fine, but don't tolerate being stung by them.

As far as the toads are concerned, if anyone figures out how to get rid of them without having to resort to killing them, I'm all ears.

I am glad that you were able to catch your rooster in time to help him. I also hope that your Independence Day was a good one. The only way to get rid of those toads without killing them according to my hubby, is to catch them and then relocate them to another place that is not near your own yard.

Yeah...that's what I was afraid of. Where we live the toad population is so abundant that relocating them really doesn't result in much relief. More simply show up. Oh well....we'll just have to remain diligent about keeping our dogs away from them.
