Arizona Chickens

I found two of the 8 missing hens.. .somehow they had gotten out.. probably when the 13 year old was filling their waterer.

My 22 year old who was here with the three youngest said he heard some commotion late one night but thought it was just chickens being chickens.... I got the chickens after he went away to college... so he didn't have a clue.

No clue where the other 6 went other than being walked off of the property.

The only down side is that it contains corn, which some people say can cause them to overheat because it is a "hot feed." The guy working there says he has fed it to all his birds for years without a problem, and I think he said that he used to show his chickens.

I bought it and was happy, the chickens seem to like it and no one has overheated (except for the rooster, who I don't think was getting water because of the grumpy silkies).

It was nice to feed them something that wasn't "kibble", but I don't think I'll buy it again because it was almost $18.00 for the 50lb sack.

Hi everyone!

A few weeks ago I set some of my DS showbird eggs under a couple of broodys.

Well, tonight when we went to feed and water, one broody has a little brown chick (lt brown dutch) and a little black chick (either a birchen oegb, or black dutch). This broody was very diligent in sitting on her eggs.

The other broody was not very diligent and we would often find her out & about with the other chickens. My DS came in tonight and said she has a little black chick under her. She has been sitting on the eggs from last night on. Apparently, she has some idea what she is doing but I'm thinkin' all this heat helped her out a bit.

We didn't expect them to hatch until tomorrow, so we were surprised. I can't wait to see how many hatch.

Congratulations! I'm not surprised the eggs hatched early, I think the excess heat speeds things up!

Oh, I just remembered you are in Tucson. Would you be willing to sell half a dozen fertile eggs? I have a friend with a broody!

Mahonri-I'm so sorry to hear about the stolen birds, I hope you get them back. When the eggs you gave me hatch, if any of them look like anything you want, you're welcome to them.

Speaking of that, I candled the eggs today and twelve (three of mine, nine of Mahonri's) showed clear signs of development. Five more were sort of iffy looking, but I'm not confident enough in my candling skills to pull them until I'm positive, so I'll candle again in a few days. One of the Leghorn eggs was clear, and I pulled it. Still, even given the most pessimistic estimate, that is 67% development on day 4/5, which isn't bad at all, given the circumstances.

Some of you may recall the continuing problem with the neighbor's turkey. The darn turkey hen is regularly making excurisions into my yard. Last week, my husband had to resuce her: somehow she let our (slightly slow and getting older) dog corner her. Anywhoo, he saved her and tossed her over the fence--it was a flurry of flapping and cursing.

Then yesterday, my dad was over for dinner, and we were eyeballing my turkey poults. My dad was making silly turkey sounds to the birds & the grandkids and *boopboopboopboopboop* 5 little turkey poults popped up onto the neighbor's shed and then crossed the alley to my wall. Great.

I catch any of those little turds, I am keeping them. I catch their momma, and I am keeping her. I am not even going to eat her anymore---she's eaten enough in the garden she owes me at LEAST one breeding season, and I worry constantly about disease. Stupid turkey.

Mahonri~ Hopefully the rest of the chickens show up soon.

LareePQG~ What a paint that must be to deal with. Neighbors can be a pain sometimes. Next thing you know you are going to be breeding turkeys not just keeping them for dinner. We might have to do some egg swapping turkeys for ducks or scovies.

Woo Hoo to the broodies and there successes so far!

Dakoda~ Congrats on the new roos! Do you have any hens for them or are you planning on getting any hens for them? I think seramas are just beautiful little chickens. They kind of remind me of chihuahuas...all that attitude in a little body.

Noskiveez~ Your story reminded me of my next door neighbors house. My neighbors house has been empty for about 9-10 years. This past Halloween when we were all gone a group of kids broke into my neighbors house. They smashed the windows with a fire extinguisher and then sprayed that everywhere in the entire house. My neighbor also had a motorhome in the back yard and a van in the back yard. Those kids broke the windows in both of the vehicles and sprayed the fire extinguisher all over both interiors. They also tried to hot wire his golf cart but I guess they couldn't get it because they just broke it.

We have been getting pretty nice weather over here, still hot but with a nice cloud cover. Yesterday it sprinkled all day just about.

I took this picture last weekend while we were out in the desert. It just amazes me how pretty of flowers can grow on these nasty jumping cactus.
